Chance me Mechy

I'm currently a Junior and looking to see what are my chances in getting into some colleges I'm planning to apply to. Just a quick note, my school does not to rank. This is because the academic load at our school is higher than the districts making the rankings skewed really high due to the fact that many students in our school have over a 4.0 GPA.

Unweighted GPA: 3.29 (projected 3.5 by 1 semester of senior year)
SAT: haven't taken it yet, but optimistic goal is a 2050 a realistic would be about 1900

Junior Course Load:
300 Physics
300 Spanish 4
400 Honors Pre Calculus
300 American History
300 American Lit
Systems of Tech (college based engineering class)
Orchestra

Projected Senior Course Load:
AP physics
AB Calculs (our school has AB and BC)
English: undecided
1st Semester: Law and Government 2nd Semester: undecided
Systems of Tech
Orchestra
AP Economics

Track and Field/Cross Country 9 10 12
Orchestra 9-12
POPS string orchestra 11-12
Person to Person (clothing/food bank) volunteering 9-12 (about 530 projected hours, currently at 334)
Studied Chinese for 10 years
Spanish Levels 1-4
Support our Soldiers 11-12
Future Internship at either BMW in NYC or Mercedes Benz (i have a personal contact at MBUSA)
Mig and Tig welding

Thought this deserved a paragraph of its own. My school is the only educational institute in CT (including UCONN) that currently has/or building a Fuel Cell prototype car. I am currently the Head Mechanical Engineer of the project (and the first Junior to acquire the position as far as anyone remembers). I am well on my way to upholding the position of Head Engineer next year. This year, I was in charge of designing the frame and the attachments for the wheel. All the components supporting the fuel cell. Basically I designed every component of the vehicle except for the brake mounts and the fuel cell itself. Our car has been as far as China for a convention and is nationally recognized.

Major:
Mechanical Engineer
Minor:
Aeronautical Engineer

Asian Male
Darien High School (Connecticut)

Schools I'm applying or thinking about applying:
University of Michigan
Purdue University Lafayette
Lehigh University
RPI (Rensselaer) Troy, NY
Georgia Tech
Embry Riddle Daytona, FL
UCONN (safety)
NYU Poly
University of Washington (even if accepted might not go, too far)
Cooper Union NYC

Your GPA is very low for most of the schools posted. And what the hell, predicted SAT score? That means nothing. If anything, post your PSAT and/or PLAN score for an indicator.

Are you doing exceptionally well in honors math and science, and in past years? Post your prior math/science grades and they MIGHT compensate for the poor overall GPA.

Very solid EC’s, but enough to get you into a school like UMich or GATech? Unlikely. Being a UMich mechanical engineering major myself, I can tell you that the course load is extremely demanding. Many incoming students with 4.0+ GPAs struggled to achieve the grades they wanted. To major in Mech and minor in Aero seems like a suicide to me.

Thanks for the reply, I posted the projected GPA just to have you chance me based on those scores so if its good, i can use those as my goals. My PSAT’s were extremely terrible at 1610 but i didn’t take that too seriously. My Math Grades have been ups and downs, Geometry has been hard for me with my grades in the B-'s. Algebra has been a strong point with all A’s in Algrebra II. Course load wise I’m not worried about, I’m a great multi-tasker. The only problem is that I procrastinate and lazy at times. (Yeah a really bad habit i know)

Was the Algebra 2 class honors? Also, being a great multi-tasker is useful in some parts of college, but courseload-wise, it won’t make a difference.

Also, that PSAT score is extremely subpar. It usually is an indicitor of your SAT score. I recommend you purchase some prep books and work on them everyday until March.

dont worry about the psat score too much i got a 159 (1590) and ended up with a 1960. just do some studying in the book and maybe take a class if you can

A 3.29 GPA and even a 3.5 is a bit low for schools the caliber of RPI, Michigan, Gatech and Cooper. 1900 SAT is also on the low side. They would be reaches but not impossible. A 2100+ on SAT would really help.
