Chance me? :] MIT/HYPS/Columbia/Caltech

To defend the OP

The vast majority of AIME Qualifiers are males

source: [AIME I & II 2010 Statistics](http://209.222.159.179/aime/2011/stats/11-AIMEstats.shtml)

females comprise of ~25.3% of all AIME participants in 2011 (based on my calculations). This is just one example to demonstrate the high discrepancy between high achieving math males and high achieving math females - a discrepancy noted enough to advantage any female who highly achieves in math.

I’d like to add more for the OP. The above statictics is the number for all AIME qualifiers internaltionally (including China, Canada and other area). Totally <3000 domestic AIME qualifiers in 2011. There are probably <300 domestic then junior (now senior) female AIME qualifiers in 2011.

You should have done EA at Caltech too.

Good chances at MIT and Caltech; USAJMO as a female will help quite a bit. At HYPS and Columbia that won’t be as big of a boost, but you still have good chances.

Thanks for the feedback! I definitely think USAJMO/AIME/math stuff is the strongest point of my application, and I’ll be retaking the SAT in December.

You definitely have a shot at all of these, but I wouldn’t say you’re a lock for any of them, with the possible exception of WUSTL.

@jdlace: No one is “good at the rest” when “the rest” is Columbia, Chicago, Cornell, and WUSTL. She has a great shot at those, and I’d be surprised if she didn’t get into one or two of them, but I don’t think she’ll get into all four of those with ease.

@xenophilia: High SAT/ACT scores do not a guaranteed acceptance make. With these kinds of schools, you can’t say “I have a high SAT/ACT score, I’m almost certainly getting in.” Harvard will reject ~75% of applicants with a 2400 this year, and so will most of these other schools.

@HobbitTon: Unfortunately, a 3.92 UW isn’t really that great for these schools. Not that it’s bad of course, but it’s certainly not going to help you with any of them. A 4.0 is practically expected, and a 3.92 is acceptable but not outstanding by any means.

@nwcrazy: While I expect OP to get into at least a few of these, I certainly don’t think she’ll get in “EVERYWHERE”. Female STEM applicants do get a bit of a boost, but not so much that she’ll be a lock for HYPS, MIT, CalTech, etc…

@OP: I’d expect you to get into at least one or two of your HYPS+MIT+CalTech schools, and then probably two or three of your other schools. You definitely need a safety in addition to your original list (which you have, as I see that you added U South Carolina in one of your other posts). I just want to deflate some of the unrealistic optimism about a clean sweep, because those are incredibly rare, especially with these schools. Not that you’re a bad applicant (probably better than me!), but you definitely need a balanced list and a reasonable expectation going into December. Good luck!

Thankyou! :]

I think you’ll get into MIT or Caltech.

Thanks for the feedback. Bumpp

bumpppppp!
