Hey so I was wondering if you guys estimate my chances of getting into some of my favorite college.
I’m absolutely obsessed with film and definitely want to major in some sort of film production. So my top schools are NYU, LMU, Emerson, BC, UT Austin, and Chapman. I’m in 11th grade and hopefully my GPA will go up by the end of this year.
Stats…
Public High School
GPA UW : 3.31
GPA W : 3.4
ACT : 28 (Plan or retaking, but I’m fairly proud of this)
AP: 4 AP’s
EC’s -
1 year of JV Lacrosse
1 year of Varsity Lacrosse
1 year of my schools Cinema Conservatory
4 summers at film camp
1 summer at a youth leadership event (only 12 people in the whole thing)
Breakfast club
1 week summer session at Vancouver film school
3 weeks interning at Gulf Islands Film and Television School
Natural High 2014 video contest winner
Winner of a local 48 hour film festival
2 “seasons” Wild life rescue team
also interned a the facility of the wild life rescue
Thanks!
A very focused interest in film probably helps you, but your grades are not very good. I think NYU is out of reach for you. None of the others are matches or safeties…all reaches (except I don’t know what “BA” is). Your ACT isn’t horrible, and it is possible one of the schools other than NYU will accept you, but I do think they are all reaches…again, I can’t comment on “BA” because I don’t know what that is.
Thanks! Sorry i meant BC (Boston College),I’m definitely trying to pull my grades up as well as the ACT. Thanks again, also do you have any ideas for colleges that might be matches for me?
Are you planning to apply to NYU/Tisch and other Film BFA programs? If so, your GPA and ACT scores are probably adequate, but they are not as important as your talent/portfolio submission. Perfect scores and grades cannot compensate if your talent submission fails to impress the reviewing committee. I would add Columbia College Chicago, as an excellent safety in the field (top-notch facilities with near-open admissions), along with Florida State, and possibly UNC-Wilmington. Temple has a pretty good Film department, and does not require a talent review (it’s a BA) for freshman admissions.
Also, bear in mind that NYU/Tisch Film School has a lower acceptance rate than Harvard or Stanford. I believe the same is true for USC. You have to meet their basic academic requirements, but talent counts more heavily toward admission.
How did your Reading and English ACT scores break down, by the way? Emerson likes good scores, especially in verbal skills, and so re-taking the ACT and trying the SAT might help you there. Your grades are probably within range if you provide good talent supplements. If you score well on Verbal sections, consider taking the Literature SAT II, but prep for it (it tests some skills that many students haven’t developed very well). A good result on that could help you out.
You have a very good shot at Emerson, I got in with similar stats. NYU is probably a no go honestly, i got rejected from there as well with a 3.4 UW GPA and a 2040 SAT. I’d totally look at Ithaca College in upstate New York, that’s where I’m going this fall and I chose it over Emerson and a bunch of other schools because they gave me a substantial scholarship and they have an AMAZING communications program in general, one of the best in the country. You’re right in range too, I’d call it a comfortable match.
And I hate to say it but you have a very low chance of getting into BC. The others are all realistic, even NYU if your portfolio is killer but BC looks at numbers almost exclusively. Also i dont think they have a very good film program. Syracuse if another good one to check out, Newhouse is the best communications school in the country.
Yeah I BC was definitely my least favorite on that list , my favorite out of those are probably Lmu, ut Austin, and Emerson. I believe I got a 27 on English and a 28 on reading. I’m currently working on my supplement right now and I really love how it’s going. The cinema conservatory in a part of is famous for having great supplements, three seniors went to tisch last year and 2 went to usc.
Oh also my bad, I don’t know how ingot it wrong again but I meant to say Boston university.
