Hi,
This is a new posting, a revised version of one that I put on here about a month and a half ago. It has some updated info–for example, I’m now applying EA and not ED. This is for financial reasons. If you can try to chance me for Northeastern EA journalism that would be helpful.
Here again are my accomplishments and updated stats:
GPA: As I said before, our school has a strange grading system (numbers out of 4, not letters) so my GPA is not representative on a 4.0 scale. I’d say I’m at least in the top 10% of my class, if not the top 5%. If I had to guess what my GPA would be on a 4.0, it would probably be 3.95 or so (not totally sure though).
SAT: 1400 (720 RW, 680 M). I know it’s not stellar for NU, but I hope that my resume, letters of rec, and essay will help them look at me and judge based on more than just my SAT score. I’m pretty proud of my essay and have worked on editing it with a past teacher of mine as well as my brother.
Letters of recommendation: I’m getting one from an English teacher of mine, as well as my school principal, with whom I’ve worked on various school committees. I’m also getting one from my employer, the sports editor for my local newspaper (I’m a paid sportswriter for the paper, as you’ll see below).
Resume:
- I have been the Co-Director of my local food shelf for the past year, and continue it today.
- Delegate selected by my school for Green Mountain Boy’s State (an American Legion program)
- Writer for my school newspaper
- Paid sports writer and photographer for my local newspaper, one that has a readership of about 7,000 people. I have held this position for about two years now, and am in my third. I cover high school sports during the school year and NECBL summer college baseball over the summer. I am including a portfolio of my work with my application.
- Committee member on three student/teacher committees at my school, working on various topics from revising the class schedule to working to better the grading system in our school.
- Sports: Varsity soccer, varsity golf senior year, varsity track and field all throughout high school (two-time state champion team member), varsity alpine skiing in 9th grade (coach’s award for most improved!).
- I’m taking all of my senior year classes at a local private university, part of a state-funded program that one must apply to and be selected for before participating. It’s called “Early College”. Through this program, I will get free credits that I believe will be transferrable to most schools.
-APs (all junior year): APUSH (got a 3 on the exam), AP French, AP Statistics (got a 3 on the exam), AP English (our school requires two advanced English classes to be taken before qualifying for the AP exam, so I have completed 1/2 of that requirement).
My brother currently goes to Northeastern, and my grandfather was a tenured professor of psychology for 40-something years there as well. I’m not sure if my brother going there will help my chances legacy-wise, and I know that they only care about immediate family so my grandfather’s position probably won’t mean much to them. I’m going to try and slip that little fact in somewhere, though!
I also visited Northeastern and took a tour this fall. Perhaps that, combined with the fact that I am applying EA, will show greater interest.
Thanks for reading this (terribly) long post. I appreciate the feedback!
