Chance me? Northwestern, NYU, U Chicago??

All right, here goes

Vietnamese/African/French female - I don't know if my ethnic diversity will help at all? haha
from Minnesota

GPA: 3.596
Class rank: 50/750 (top 10% & weighted)
ACT: 33
AP stats: 5
AP us hist: 5
AP world: 4

Senior Classes (CIS are college in school classes, we earn college credit from university of minnesota)
CIS Writing/Lit
CIS Gov/Econ
AP Env. Science
AP Psych
AP Calc AB
CIS Public Speaking
Journalism

Extracurriculars
-Editor in chief - school newspaper (columnist for 2 years prior). Completely redid/remodeled the paper. about 6 hours a week on editing/layouts?
-Senior editor - yearbook. 3 hours a week on layouts
-Founder/editor-in-chief - school magazine. it focuses on variety and arts.
-Writing center tutor - only seniors can do it, but you have to go through an application process with recommendation letters and stuff.

Volunteering
- Teacher aid since 9th grade
- Hospital volunteer since 8th grade
- Vietnamese community of minnesota - volunteered since I was 8. I used to help with fundraisers and festivals, then when I got older, I did more organizational stuff. I also taught a few Vietnamese language classes. (I am extremely proficient)

Work
- Tuxedo store 40 hours a week in the summer and 25ish during the school year

I understand my grades are extremely low for those schools. I was really hoping my passion for my extracurriculars and test scores would be taken into account. And if you can't tell already, I really want to major in journalism haha

UChicago-if you write an essay that really stands out
Northwestern- mid-high reach (your gpa and rank are really bringing you down)
NYU- your best shot out of these 3 schools…match/low-reach

Both Northwestern and NYU are low reaches for you, especially if you write a stellar essay. I suggest writing an essay about your experiences within the Vietnamese community - it would be very unique. :]

UChicago is a medium-high reach. It’s very competitive, and, unless you’re applying for something in regards to writing/the arts, your chances may be slim ( i.e. UChicago’s business program is amazing).

Also, is your GPA weighted? If so, you’ll have to compensate with other aspects of your application.

I know  I completely messed up my first year of high school. I decided I wanted to have fun rather than work so hard in school and I REALLY regret it. I got a 3.88 and 3.98 my junior year though, so I can only hope the colleges take the improvement into consideration.

and no, my GPA is unweighted, I wish it was weighted… might help me out a little

anyone?? and this is especially to see if i can get into northwestern. their medill school of journalism is the goal.

Goal is attainable. Your EC’s support your interest, and your senior schedule is rigorous. You know your GPA is weaker-so address that in your essays. G’Luck!

Hey!

Your GPA may not be on par for these schools, but colleges do like to see progress, and junior is considered significantly more than freshman year, so I’d say your progression will definitely help you. Your ACT score and AP scores look great. What I think could really make you stand out is if you talk about your experiences within the Vietnamese community, as love4medicine said. I’d say Northwestern is a reach, but you definitely have a chance- good luck!

last desperate bump…?

im in the same boat ceekaytee, my gpa is only 4.2 weighted but it went from 4.0W to 4.6W in my junior semesters. I only have a 29 on the ACT but im planning on doing early decision.
