Chance Me: Not Top 7% for the College of Liberal Arts

Hey guys so I am a first-generation Hispanic who is currently in the top 17% of my class (112/638) and applying to the College of Liberal Arts to major in English. I have plenty of leadership position and honors such as overseeing that my high school got an orchestra program and being nominated for the People to People Youth Ambassador program (I couldn’t attend- money issues at the time), On top of that, I am in about three extra-curricular clubs, a varsity sport for the past two years (captain of the team now) and am currently in dual enrollment with the local community college (graduating with 21 credit hours). I am already accepted into UTSA in hopes of attending for a year and transferring to the flagship in Austin if I am not accepted right out of high school.

My SAT’s were:
Reading and Writing: 660
Math: 530
Essay: 6 throughout

Total score of 1190

ACT:
28 Reading
26 English
17 Math
23 Science
23 Writing

Composite of 24

I’ve had my application essays edited by my English 1302 Professor and through an online tutoring center (qannection).

I know my test scores/rank are not as great as they should be, but I’m still applying in hopes that the holistic review will help. If you can please give me honest replies and my chances, I would appreciate it. I am absolutely in love with UT and after debating, I am applying this weekend through ApplyTexas, and while I don’t have my hopes too high for this institution because of my adcademics, I’m hoping someone could tell me how good my chances are.

For those who will say I should retake my tests:
Please keep in mind that the upcoming tests are late in the year and the score reports will not be ready by Dec. 31, UT’s deadline for test scores. I know it’s a long shot but I am relying on holistic review and my experiences on my resume to help me.

Just apply and with any luck, even if you don’t get in, you will get CAPped. You have a chance and its hard to quantify. Then you can attend after your first year at UTSA. Since you’ve got your back up plan that’s a good thing. You can be successful at UTSA also if you are determined and stick with it which I’m sure you will.
