Chance Me now that I have Test Scores?

I know these get old but I need to be chanced at: Harvard, Yale EA, Wharton, UNC EA, Wake Forest (chance me specifically for some of their big merit based scholarships), Michigan State, Wisconsin (in-state), and Northwestern.

I have a few specific questions below that are bolded.

I want to go to law school-will probably major in business, econ, poli sci, Spanish, history, philosophy, or an interdisciplinary program

GPA: 4.43
Rank: 2 of 287
Suburban Public HS

High Honor Roll, Perfect Attendance

Hardest course load available-honors classes are only offered in 9 and 10 English.

10 APs total-

Euro (10)-5
Stats (11)-
US (11)-
Language (11)-
Physics C (12)
Calc BC (12)
Psych (12)
Spanish Language (12)
Literature (12)
Chem (12)

I’m taking more APs than anyone else at my school senior year.

Hoping to get one of the AP Scholar awards, which one would I qualify for?

Test scores-
34 ACT
1390 SAT
SAT II US-800
SAT II Math Level 2-780

I know my SAT score isn’t as good as my ACT score, but since it’s not terrible, will colleges realize that I put my efforts into improving my ACT score and sort of “use” that score in the whole process?

Extracirriculars:
Debate-Captain (11-12), two time state top speaker, 2008 national tournament qualifier, top neg team in state, numerous local and regional 1st places and top speaker awards, helped coordinate fundraising efforts to go to overnight tournaments, most valuable and most consistent debater awards from HS

Forensics-extemporaneous speaking, state semifinalist, numerous local tournament finalist awards and places (3rdish)

For forensics and debate, I am on track to break my school’s record of most NFL points and am an NFL Academic All-American.

School Newspaper Reporter
Math Team-selected from team to take AMC twice
NHS Secretary
Science Club

FBLA-officer, two 2nd places at regional leadership conferences, thus a two time state qualifier

Student cabinet-advisory group to superintendent, first student selected to be on district wide technology committee.

Community service-volunteer 2 hrs weekly at local youth center. I will be tutoring 1 hr everyday next year.

Work Experience:
Customer Service at local pool. Been there for 3 summers, I’m basically the “head” of customer service, but no title to prove it. How could I note this on apps?

Helped out at my mom’s store—I don’t get paid but I probably spend a good 15 hours a week year round helping—how can I put this on apps, since it’s a family business, I don’t get community service hours?

Recommendations:
AP Language teacher-should be really good
Calc 1/AP Calc Teacher-not as great, but he still looks upon me highly, he just has to write a lot more recommendations.
Debate/Forensics coach-prime EC emphasis.
Boss/Community Service Supervisor-same guy, thought I could kill two birds with one stone if I pursue him.

Essays-not sure yet, I’m a good writer but I’m still brainstorming ideas.

A Couple Last Questions regarding chances:

Since I’m from WI and the Midwest is generally less represented at the Ivies, will that help me at any of the schools?

Does our class’s valedictorian applying to Harvard and Yale too hurt my chances there, how likely are they to let multiple people from the school in? I like to think my ECs are better and my ACT score is better, so what do you all think? I have a harder schedule next year as well.

Thanks in advance.

All in all I think you have an okay shot to get into the Harvard/Yale/Wharton. Your courseload is pretty much average for the applicant pool. Your EC’s sound really solid (I’m an LD debater, and making it to nationals is impressive). However, other than forensics, the rest of your EC’s are pretty typical. You need to make a really intense effort to make your essay and app. stand out from the rest of the applicant pool, because there’s the danger of being bypassed for being to “average”. Consider retaking your SAT’s.

And yes, you will be helped (marginally) by the fact that you come from the Midwest, because college do make an effort to have geographical diversity. Also, I think you have a better shot than your valedictorian. Colleges will care more that you’re challenging yourself academically with your classes, than about you chasing a title that will become irrelevant in, say, 2 years. Especially if you EC’s and ACT score are better.

Good Luck!

What about the other non-Ivies?

They should only count for ACT score.

bump…i only got one reply regarding my actual chances.

Are the GPA and rankings that important? I attend a (tough) public high school, I dont even think they have rankings…anyway, I have good scores, 2200 on the SAT, 35 on the ACT, and 770 on the math II and Chem. My GPA is 4.05 if I add my Sophomore and Junior Year. I did not work hard and got some Bs but ended up my last junior semester with 4.6 (I am finally getting my act together). I did get 11 on the essay for ACT and 12 on the SAT essay. I have several internships where I did high level research work…Is aiming at Stanford a lost cause? What about UCB and UCLA? I never quite worked hard and I regret it but I just turned 16… I guess I was not quite mature…I will end up with just 5 AP classes and 5 honors courses…I believe I can write a great essay. Let me know what you think…

bumping up my old thread…please no one hijack it again. thanks guys, ill have my AP scores on monday so I can add those too.

Hey all-
still haven’t gotten a realistic response for my chances anywhere. But here are my AP Scores this year:

APUSH-5
AP Stats-5
AP Language and Comp-5

Harvard - High Reach
Yale EA - Reach
Wharton - Lower Reach
UNC EA - (University of NC @ where?) probably Safety
Wake Forest - Safety/Match (no idea about scholarships)
Michigan State - Safety
Wisconsin - Safety
Northwestern - Match

And you are an AP Scholar with Honor. Good luck :)

I’m talking about UNC-Chapel Hill. I didn’t think it would be a safety as an out of state kid. Why is Yale EA only a reach whereas Harvard is so much more of a reach? What’s the big diff. btw their admssions?

It is slightly more likely to get accepted to Yale, but I was looking more at the EA. With your stats already you have a decent shot at Yale EA, but Harvard RD is.. well, not “a crapshoot”, but insanely hard to predict. I put it as ahigh reach for almost everyone, and a reach for Gold medal science olympiads/intel/siemens finalists.

Chapel hill changes UNC to Match, you have a really good chance at getting in. Your SATs are their average, but your ACT really kicks their ass. Combined with class rank/GPA/EC’s I can’t see why you wouldn’t get in.

Harvard - High Reach
Yale EA - High Reach
Wharton - High Reach
UNC EA - Safety/Match because you’re OOS
Wake Forest - Low Match
Michigan State - Safety
Wisconsin - Safety
Northwestern - Match

Keep in mind that Yale uses an SCEA (single choice early action) and therefore you can only apply to Yale EA and no where else EA.

Oooo, fotgot about that one. You have to make the choice, would you rather take the lower chances on an Ivy, or try with a little higher to ensure your spot at a good college?

Whats your UW GPA? I forgot to ask.

perfect attendence…lol
you’ll get into those schools

Hey-adding another school–what about Washington University in St. Louis?
