chance me? (out of state)

around a 3.6 weighted GPA (not great I know)
1780 SAT
26 ACT (retaking on saturday)
LOTS of EC including:
sports (track) and instruments (piano)
volunteer at a few non-profits
member and founder of some clubs
participated in DECA
member of STAND and helped organize a local rally

my only concern is that the UC system is way more difficult to get into if you are out of state, or so I've heard...so far I have applied to a few CA privs (USD, Chapman, USF), but am not sure if my grades are good enough to get me into the UC system being out of state...any insight would be great

Oh I also have some amazing letters of recs and know I can write a good essay

You're right that it is more difficult to get into out of state, but I wouldn't say a lot more.

I can't really say for certain whether or not you'd get accepted because the essay does count for a lot, especially at Irvine which is one the three UC's (next to Berkeley and LA) which has a more holistic admissions process.

This means that at San Diego, for example, an applicant is assigned a point value for their SAT, their GPA, what a reader thought of their essay, how many EC's they were in, etc. If at the end their score is above a certain value, they are admitted. If not, they are rejected.

This is in contrast to the three schools I listed above, where a student is admitted based on the overall feeling their application gives a reader.

Here are the stats for last year: The middle 50% of combined verbal and math scores for those admitted was 1090 to 1340. The average gpa of those admitted was 3.94 weighted-UC's will only count 8 semesters worth of AP classes when calculating gpa.

Oh, and none of the UC's consider recommendations.

I hope you get in, because it's always nice to have more out of state people here.

so do you think it would be worth applying? also when is the EA cut-off for the UC schools?

I would say yes, especially if you are retaking the ACT and if you think you can produce a great essay.

The UC's have no formal ea or ed admission program in place. You can apply from now until November 30th, I believe. You typically hear back from the campuses in late February and March.

Out of curiosity, where are you from and why are you considering applying to Irvine?

honestly, you're a bit on the low end for even in-state admissions, and being out of state will only hurt your chances.

did you take the SAT II's? i think you're a bit of a reach.

i would also say low end. although possible.
