Hi I am about to apply to Penn state and would like to know my realistic chances:
Stats:
1270 SAT
18 total AP+Hs Courses taken at a competitive in state High school
3.3 unweighted GPA and unoffically a 3.58 Weighted (I did it myself since my school doesn’t weight nor class rank)
ik extracurriculars don’t matter but I have done sports and volunteering if needed on application
Well if your school does not weight, what do they send to Penn State? If they send your unweighted gpa, that could hurt you. What major are you hoping to apply to? Your SAT is good, your GPA is a little low unweighted. It really depends on what major you are applying to.
@jlhpsu for my SRAR I think I put unweighted gpa. But since i took 18 Honors+ AP classes throughout Hs wouldn’t admissions take that into considerations? And I’m applying undecided and selected summer option as well.
Penn State definitely looks at the rigor of your classwork, so that will help you. Still, DUS and summer option are your best option to maximize your chances.
I don’t know if PSU looks at unweighted or weighted GPA, but I read in admissions information that GPA is 2/3 of the admissions decision, and scores, activities, essay 1/3.
You’d be in, no problem, due to high GPA/course rigor (+good test scores and everything else)… Except you applied to Smeal and, worse, to Finance. Keep in mind 90% first year applicants are turned down from Smeal and that finance is the most selective major… You should call and say you’ve decided to apply DUS. Then, you’d be in, no problem.
Keep in mind that even the 8% admitted as pre majors…are only premajors. They’re not in the major. They have to take the same classes as the DUS students, get the same grades as the DUS students.
I have 3 questions: 1. Is the high school transcript always requested? The reason I ask is because my child is taking a Senior class now that is causing difficulty. If a ‘D’ is on the final transcript (in this Senior class), could it revoke an acceptance decision once the final transcript is sent in (assuming they are always requested)? I’m wondering if we should drop the class and not even risk it but my child thought the class would be helpful for college. 2. Does it improve one’s chance of being accepted into University Park if their parent/aunts are alumni? 3. Finally, is the Department of Kinesiology more challenging to get accepted into than DUS?
Yes, kinesiology is way more difficult to get into than DUS.
I don’t think a D senior year will revoke an admission but it may be worth it to drop it since a student who performs at D level can’t be understanding much anyway, and that’ll leave more time to focus on the other classes and guarantee all other grades are good.
