Chance me pleaaase?!

I’m also a junior right now at a very competitive high school in the bay area, california.
My sophomore year grades were not good at all because of personal family issues, but there is an upward trend in my gpa.
oh yeah, i’m asian. i was raised here but was born in taiwan.
if it helps, i want to be a nurse or a physician’s assistant when i grow up, so i’ll probably be majoring in something biology related.

SAT: 2190 CR: 760 W: 700 M: 730 (I might retake it?)
ACT: Taking this spring
SAT II: Chinese: 760, Taking Bio, US History, and Math level 2 before the school year ends. Aiming for at least a 780, 760, and 780 respectively.
GPA: 3.4 UW, 3.64 W
AP: Chinese (5), APUSH, APBiology,
*currently enrolled, taking exam this may
Anticipated senior schedule
-AP US gov
-AP Econ
-AP Calc BC
-Contemporary Lit
-Photography

this summer, i’m planning on volunteering at Stanford Hospital and tutoring kids in math.
I also have around 200 community service hours.
I’m also involved in DECA, a business club.

Last summer, I took Psychology at a local community college and received a B, which would be an A weighted, correct? would that factor into my GPA?
but this spring quarter, I’m planning on taking physics, and over the upcoming summer, I’m planning on taking Statistics, Chemistry, and Business, which would all be weighted because i’m taking it @ a cc right?

if it helps, i also got a 231 on my psat, and i researched a little, and i think i have a prettty good chance at being a national merit semifinalist! i’m not 100% sure if my gpa will hold me back from being a finalist though. Is it wrong that I’m hoping that this will somewhat cushion my gpa?? :(

so i know my gpa isn’t great at alll, but is there anything i can do to increase my chances of admission?!

i definitely know that 231 on PSAT will qualify you to the next round, and i don’t think your GPA affects your PSAT score, until only later. and i think it works the other way; the gpa makes your 231 more vulnerable during the apps time.

regarding UC Davis, i feel you have a good chance, as long as you GPA was above 3.5. if you came from monta vista, that’s an exception :stuck_out_tongue: so it’s a 50-50 chance you will get in Davis! good luck!

i am from monta vista! how does that affect my chances…? :o sorry i’m so new to this LOL.

haha good thing you’re from MV! i would say you do have a pretty strong chance getting into UC Davis, as long as you explain your personal issues. what’s your intended major?

i’m not exactly sure what to apply for? :o
something biology related i guess, do you have any tips/suggestions?

hmm davis is pretty good for agriculture, and yes biological sciences too. but i would suggest you try ucsd too, since life sciences there are much better compared to davis!

Be warned that the UCs only grant 8 extra “credit” points. So, after 8 semesters of honors/AP/CC etc. you won’t get any further improvement to your UC weighted average. There’s an unweighted average, a capped weighted average (UC) and then the full weighted average. However, be aware that competitive schools pay attention to course rigor. So, although you may not be able to improve your GPA as much as you would hope, you do get notice for a rigorous courseload. If you are borderline and your grades are not commensurate with your test scores, the school may ask for 7th semester grades and give you an opportunity to discuss the problems you’ve encountered and how they will influence your being a better college student because of them. Be prepared to address this issue, because if they do ask, usually the window is short (like a WEEK) to answer. Good luck.

bump 10char

I believe you are impacted by grade deflation. I am sure UCD is well aware of Cupertino school district’s high API score.

UCD/UCSB: low reach

lol i would reconsider this… with a lot of rejections and waitlisted people, it would be a reach for both you and me :O
