Hey all.

I'm new here. But not new to the Internet, or education.

OK. So, I wandered the CollegeBoard site for months, and added ___ of my favorite colleges in the US to my list. Now, I need some of your help to narrow the list down to a suitable number..

First of all, some things about me so you get an idea, if these will be suitable for me or now.

I'm an Indian student.
I'm 17 year old now (March 2011) and I'll be completing my class XII (high school) in March 2012.
So, I'm looking for a Sep 2012 intake..
I'm looking to apply somewhere around December 2011.

Here are my class scores from last 3 years.
Class IX = 85%
Class X = 86%
Class XI = 79%

Also, I've been an active in badminton and have represented my school in numerous (50+) badminton tournaments, and won majority of them. I've played badminton at National level for 3 consecutive years..

Other than sports, I've been to other various competitions, and won them.

Next up is my SAT. It was pretty low: 1700. I'm retaking the SAT on 1 October 2011, and am sure to get a 2000+ score this time.

Also, some people told me that TOEFL is required, some told only SAT is enough if you are from an English medium school. So, should I take the TOEFL, too?

What course I want? Computer Software Engineering or whatever is required to be a Software Engineer! What course do I need, then? Computer Science?

OK. So I think you know me a little now. So, here is my list of college.

<a href="http://i.imgur.com/f9Mhl.png%5B/IMG%5D">http://i.imgur.com/f9Mhl.png

Almost all of these universities offer Computer Science as well, but as I said, I want to become a Software Engineer, so which of these should I rule out completely?

Also, other than these, what other colleges/universities can I look at?

Also, McGill University, University of California--Berkeley and Carnegie Mellon University require SAT Subject Test scores as well. How many should I give, and of what subjects?

Please help me. Please answer my doubts, and post here if you need to know anything else about me.

Thanks
Karan

You should take the TOEFL. Some colleges will require it of all international students.

There are a number of courses of study that could lead to a career in software engineering. Computer Science and Software Engineering are two obvious ones. Management Information Systems, Math, Computer Engineering are a few others. Really almost any quantitative field would be fine as long as you’re supplementing your course work with experience - learning programming languages on your own, contributing to open source projects, getting internships, etc.

@lynxinsider: Thanks for your response.

All right. So about TOEFL, when should I take it? Before or after my SAT? And what kind of preparation does it need?

See, I plan on winding up with all this (including sending applications) by December. So… maybe if you could suggest me a planner?

your questions are so basic that you should be able to find from college websites easily. if you haven’t browsed them thoroughly, you’re not ready to apply yet.

@itsme123: Every college says, “Join Us”… I can’t do that of course. I’m planning on applying to a very limited number of universities (5-7).

So, I would appreciate if you could answer my questions, please. :)

BUMP! I need help ASAP, please!!

Help help help!!!

No one to help, eh???

The last bump!!

Thankfully!

@annasdad: What?

Why aren’t people posting in this thread???

i am internationa lstudent and if you’re talking about the toefl i can help you
in fact some high ranked scholls would give you the chance of posting the TOEFL or SAT score
however others want both
as for the toefl you must check the site
www.ets.org/toefl
there are two types ibt and pbt
and no need for special prep because if you do well on the sat the TOEFL would be a piece of cake

Anyway, i am sitting for the pbt on october 15th after the SAT1 of october and before the sat2 in november

I have registered for the TOEFL as well now. I’m taking the TOEFL on Nov 12, and SAT on Oct 1.
