Hello everyone, first off, thank you for taking the time to look at my post, I’ve been a long time lurker of the forums on here and hope to be a lot more involved in the coming months as I begin preparing for applying to colleges. First off, let me leave my list of schools I am considering (btw I plan on majoring in finance):
My number one choice: Penn (Wharton)
Other choices: UMich (Ross, a close second), Emory University, NYU (Stern), Notre Dame, Northwestern, University of Chicago, UVA, , UNC-Chapel Hill
*Please let me know of any other schools you believe would be appropriate considering my stats and intended major, but I do plan on narrowing my list down of course for senior year as it is a bit excessive.
Let me start of by saying that I am currently a Junior enrolled in a public high school in Naples, FL
About me:
I am a Hispanic male, my mom is a single mother who has never received a penny in child support throughout my whole life, I guess I’ll get into this now since I’m on the subject. My father left me when I was four, I hardly know anything about him, but he basically left my mom, who has no college degree, and is from another country, to raise me by herself. I’d say our income is less than 30k a year, just recently though this year she did make a bit more due to her working a very demanding job that allows her to work weeks straight away from home, this has caused me to be alone for the past one and a half years on a normal basis, I rarely ever see her anymore. Over the past year my depression has increased tremendously to the point where I’m unable to even focus on anything, I’ve lost motivation in everything I do, which has caused a decline in my grades. To start off my freshman year wasn’t very good, but there was an increase and my sophomore year I did a lot better, but my junior year has shown a decline as my symptoms have been at an all-time high, but I can’t seek any medical attention due to not being insured, nor being able to afford a proper specialist (psychologist, psychiatrist, etc.) to help with my treatment which has been detrimental to my college plans. Anyways my current stats:
GPA: 3.65UW, 4.25W
ACT: 34
SAT: haven’t taken, will take new one in March
APS (Scores were not above threes): Human Geography (freshman year), World History (sophomore year)
Currently taking AP English Lang and APUSH, I predict a 4 or higher in both due to English being one of my better subjects along with math, and I’ve been studying the practice books for both classes quite a bit.
I’ve also taken several AICE classes, all of which I got the equivalent of an AP 3 or higher on all the tests.
Let me know if there’s any other information I can provide from above^
EC’s:
•Tons of volunteer hours through school, Rotary Club (doing volunteer work around town during special events in excess of 8 hours in a row at times)
•Volunteered over 100 hours through church packing boxes for troops (plan to continue)
•Placed second in CEO Academy, which was a program that ran during the summer at a local four-year University where you had to be selected into the program in the first place based on academics, EC’s, recommendations, etc. and you were given a team and had to create a startup in a week and present to investors (similar to shark tank), we all won partial scholarships to that school
•The above experience has opened up internships, one of which was with the CEO of a company in a nearby city (was a $300m+ a year company), I also have the opportunity to set up an internship with a local financial advisor in my city, as well as a realtor.
•In school, I did track for a couple of years, but I currently am not doing any sports atm, but am treasurer of Pre-med club (will be President next year), and am Founder and president of the Investors Club at my school, I also participate in CORE club which is similar to DARE as far as resisting drugs, I’ve accumulated several volunteer hours being a part of this club
•after school I work on a “simulated portfolio” where I act as though I have a set amount of money invested, and follow the stock market closely and have actually netted some very impressive returns (in excess of 65% during some months) ^ I know this part was useless but I just wanted to solidify my interest in stocks and investing
•I currently work a job on Friday, Saturday and Sunday to help pay some bills and save a little for some stuff I may want in the future
I don’t know what else to write at this point, if there’s anything else I need to include please let me know. Thank you for your time!
