Hi I'm a senior and I'd like to get chanced for RPI please! I'm worried I do not have much ECs and I'm especially worried that I won't be able to afford it.

-GPA : weighted: 4.0+ unweighted :3.9
-SAT - 2230
-SAT Subject Tests: Math Level 2 (800), Chemstry (750), U.S. History (690)
-IB Diploma in hand a year early under a gifted program. 9 AP courses taken with five 4s and four 5s.
-school ranking: 14
-ranking in school: 19/1300s

EC: Key Club, Fleurs (much like Key Club but more school-oriented), Bible Camp, Church-related services. Varsity Tennis(4 years), Ultimate Frisbee (regionally competitive high school team member, 3 years). most of the volunteer clubs I have participated in for 3 years.

I am also worried about my need for financial help. Currently my family income is in the 20,000s because my dad is receiving unemployment benefits but somehow manages to pull in some cash. I'm a first generation immigrant meaning i'm the first one in my family (even extended) to attend a college in the U.S. (My parents both went to college, my dad in a technical college in our native country) Even with these factors, I'm afraid I won't be able to cover the debt and will graduate with a huge load on my back.

I'm also thinking about UW honors which is much cheaper and perhaps easier to get into. But I've heard some great things about RPI although I haven't visited it.

I think your chances are excellent. You won’t know financial aid packages until you try. Also apply elsewhere because financial aid packages vary between schools. Good state schools with honors programs are excellent choices as well, though I’m partial to RPI for engineering these days. Penn State has a great honors program but competitive admission depends upon essays and recommendations more than SATs.

I also think you have a great chance to get in. Make sure you have some backups though as RPI gets more competitive every year. As sandpit said you don’t know how much aid you can get unless you apply. RPI is an awesome science/engineering school and I hope you get the chance to study there.

Thank you guys so much for the advice, especially sandpit for the other options. I am interested in majoring in aeronautical engineering and/or material science, but I am open to any other options. I am applying to Princeton just to see if I get in. If I do, I’m sure my current financial status will solve most of the tuition problems. But thank you again!

P.S. If you know any other good schools for the majors I mentioned, please feel free to post!!! thanks again

You have the stats to be a good candidate for any college. Don’t overlook the Ivies or MIT. If you get in, you would probably have free tuition after their merit aid.
