I’m planning on applying to Brown PLME, Northwestern HPME (My dad went to NU for undergrad and med school), Harvard, Princeton, Colorado College, and CU-Boulder.

Thanks so much for the feedback!

Oh, and I think I will be applying to Brown PLME Early Decision.

bump...........

Good chance. Good luck

well you've got the stats, but what about your reasons for applying to PLME? I can only speculate since I'm only an incoming freshman, but it seems like you have to really do some thinking about the medical profession and how you'll benefit from a program like PLME or HPME. For Brown there isn't even a separate interview for the med program, so it'll really have to come through in your essays

If you can make a compelling case to the admissions committee, everything else about your application (ok perhaps the ECs are less stellar than an Ivy might be used to seeing) suggests that you have as good a shot as anyone. Keep in mind it's still a crapshoot, with that roughly 5% accept rate

to be honest, even though i'm still only 17, the only thing i can see myself doing is practicing medicine. i love biology, have good people skills, and i want to help people. I'm planning to take that angle in my essay, and throw in that my dad is a doctor and talk about his experiences. I'm adding some more health and service related EC's, such as shadowing physicians and volunteering for a leukemia/lymphoma fundraiser. I think that'll help my chances, since my EC's are the weakest area.

again I'm speculating here, but it seems like those reasons you have would be nice for a conventional med school essay especially if they were fleshed out some more (it's cliche advice, however, to point out that you should never ever use the "I want to help people" line)...

but why PLME, a guaranteed 8-year program, instead of the traditional premed path? how would you use your less-stressful undergrad years? what could you accomplish at PLME that you couldn't anywhere else?

obviously I'm not trying to pressure you into answers right now, but these are things you should really think about as you contemplate applying ED

no no i'm glad someone is asking me the questions i need to be able to answer. i'm sure stuff like that will come up in an alumni interview as well. i think i want to do PLME so i can focus on learning, especially learning what i want, without having the normal premed focus of getting as high of a GPA as possible and studying for the MCATs. I'd rather learn the material because i want to learn it, not so i can pass a test. and I can take risks with what classes i choose, exploring what I want without fear of having a bad grade dragging my GPA down. I'm actually leaving tomorrow to check out HYP and brown, hopefully i'll find some inspiration about what to write, and more clarity as to my decision.
