Chance Me Please?! BA/BS/MD Programs

Ok, so I am applying to a bunch of BS/MD programs, as well as to some reputable undergrad schools. I am thinking of the programs at Rice, Brown, URochester, Rutgers, BU, GW, USC, Drexel and PSU, maybe some others, and Cornell, JHU, Princeton, UPenn, UMichigan (Ann Arbor).

GPA (uw): 3.5, probably 3.6 by next semester.
I took all accelerated classes, and have 8 APs so far. My school doesn't rank, but I can safely say I am in the top 10%.

APs: Bio-5, World-5, US-4, Calc AB-5, Chem-5, English Lang-5, Spanish-5, Enviro-4
Taking Physics, Euro, Calc BC, Econ, Pyschology, and English Lit this year.

SAT (math and verbal): 1520 (should I send this or not? Since my ACT is a lot better...)
ACT: 35
SAT IIs: Biology-750, Math 2-730, Spanish - 750, Chem-770
ECs: 300 hours at hospital, shadowing 2 doctors, President of Red Cross, Key Club, Head Tutor for Peer Help Program, Editor of Newspaper, vocal instruction, member of out-of-school orchestra, lots of community service, and some other cultural groups

I go to a really competitive school (its a university town), and I am worried that the schools will not care that it is tough, they will just see my GPA and "rip up my application."

Hey! I’m in the same boat as you! I have a low GPA (because I went to India for my first 2 years of high school) and high standardized testing scores (SAT I - 2320, SAT II - 800,780).
I’m also applying to virtually all the schools you are applying too!
Hopefully they don’t rip our applications up!!
And I’m worried about the same thing too… (The GPA and ripping up your application thing.)

Well, as you know yourself, ACT is very good and GPA is lower than average applicant to combined programs. You need more safeties on your list.

How well does your high school generally do in college admissions? If it sends tons to top schools and programs, chances are adcoms will be familiar with its rigor.

Yeah you have some pretty stellar standardized test scores, but a lot of the applicants at the bs/md schools and other top tier schools will have similar test scores as well. The low GPA, especially if your school does not rank, might put you at a disadvantage. I agree with schrizto though, if your school regularly sends lots of students to top schools, then you might fare alright. Good luck!

thanks for the feedback everyone! i did consider what you said and added a few safeties on my list. so far, i have had 2 interviews for the program, and i think they went really well.

on another note, does anyone have any interview tips? some people say that after the interview, adcoms generally don’t look too much at your stats - they focus on you as a person/your medical experience. is this right?

fishyfishy: yay, its good to have a buddy! have you heard anything yet?
