Chance me for (in order of importance):
Columbia-ED
Duke
Brown
MIT-EA
Cal-Tech-EA
Amherst
Wash-U
UCLA
Berkeley
Georgetown
University of Washington

Thank you! And i will definitely chance back

Columbia-ED: reach (raise that cr score!)
Duke: low reach
Brown: low/mid reach (Asian status does not help)
MIT-EA: high reach
Cal-Tech-EA: uber reach
Amherst: low/mid reach
Wash-U: low reach/highish match
UCLA: low reach (OOS very tough)
Berkeley: low reach
Georgetown: low reach
University of Washington: safety/in

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but as an Asian applicant, you are held to a higher standard in the admissions process. Try to raise that SAT Cr to around 720, but your app looks relatively solid. Best of luck!

I pretty much agree with noreally (except caltech should be high reach. It’s not that much harder than MIT/Columbia, especially with an 800 math)

Your main weakness is that you seem to be the stereotypical asian applicant - all math, not much else. Do you have any awards from other clubs/activities? For everyone but caltech, you gotta show that you’re more well rounded.

my chances thread:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/769425-oh-my-god-im-senior-chance-me-computer-science-schools.html</a></p>

Yeah, I’m pretty much agreeing with kevmus.

As for the clubs and such do you do any more sports, even out of school, that you could use? Playing an instrument might help too.

Chance me?
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/774543-chance-me-if-you-want-will-much-appreciated.html</a></p>

WA helps as does first gen. Another 50 CR points would help a lot.

Why not take the ACT? Many folks score materially higher on the ACT than the SAT.

Typical applicant. Not much excitement. Just screams I like math! yay.

You should have done more with math, maybe talk to professors at local CC and try to get an internship, or do a project involving mathematics and relating that to something.

The schools you listed will see your interest, but they don’t see the passion.

Interest vs. Passion are two very different things. You demonstrate interest, but no real passion for math except awards, and while they are great, they are useless.

Freefork: Unfortunately, the main sport I play is basketball and my school team is too good to make the team. i played C-team a JV summer, but I will most likely not mention that on my app., and I only play in a church league which isnt worth mentioning.

hmom5: thanks! I am trying to raise my CR score by the time october rolls around.

pbr: I am signed up for the ACT, but the only scores that will really help me are a 35 or a 36 as a 34 is equivalent to a 2250. Therefore, since I have not studied at all, I am considering not taking it.

ChristianWu: I understand what you are saying. It’s been tough to do all that kind of stuff since my class workload was very difficult junior and this year as a senior. My main time dedication was to my math team and volunteer projects.

More opinions please!

bumpppppppp

bump…

ill chance you back!!

i’d say you have a fairly solid chance of getting into columbia. i would also recommend taking the ACT’s to see if you get a better score than your SAT’s, even though they’re good too.

You have a decent chance of getting into Columbia, pretty much a coin flip.

A lot of slots at Columbia are taken by international students… And as someone else already stated, unfortunately being an Asian Male doesn’t help with admissions :(

You could be worse off, being an Asian female.

Anyways, I think you have a decent chance. I think Cal Tech and MIT would be high reaches though.

It is true that you fit the Asian stereotype, all math, but I think that the first generation college student status might help. UCLA wants out of state students who can pay full tuition, so you have an advantage there.

Best of luck in the application process.

Wow I’m jealous of students like you with those perfect SAT II scores :P. But I think your extra curriculars are good, you’ve got your leadership roles and some diversity with the basketball coaching + church activities. Class rank is pretty good, class rigor is excellent, and gpa is very good (however with that high of a GPA and your rank being 20, this shows heavy grade inflation to colleges). Also being a first generation college student is a plus from my view point. I think you’ve got a pretty good shot at Columbia ED but remember there are others like you as well so knock it out of the park with those essays and you should be good. :)

Thanks for the positive responses guys!! It gives me glimmers of hope :]. It’s true I do fit the stereo type, but Im hoping I can show I’m good at math but also well balanced with my full IB schedule and recommendation letters. Regarding my rank: It is not exactly 20, but more like 10-15, just wanted to be extra cautious.

I’ll try to knock out those essays and more opinions are appreciated!!

people keep saying raising your CR score. in my opinion, at some point, the SAT scores are all the same. basically 2200+ is fine. the SAT is simple a measure of how well you can take a standardized test. people these days seem to forget about that. i think you have a pretty decent shot @ columbia. by decent i mean like 30% or so. keep in mind there’s about 15% that are simply in already and 15% that are simply unqualified. that being said, 30/70, is almost 50%! good luck!

thanks! do you feel so? a 690 IS a little low… i may study and retake it. thanks for the response though! more opinions plz…

I’d say you have a pretty solid chance at Columbia (its usually a reach for most everyone, though). I’d say you’re fairly good for the majority of your schools, MIT and Cal-Tech being highest reaches :)

Haha thanks!! chanced bak

It’s essential to look at the facts because myths like this one abound.

A quick look at any college common data set will show you this is far from true.
