hmom5: are you saying “huh!!!” to the statement prior to the 30/70 prediction, or to the 30/70 prediction itself? the latter would be particularly discouraging…

I was commenting on the whole statement, but to be frank, I don’t think you have a 30% chance at Columbia.

If you look at the facts–getting in with a 690CR score is unlikely. Those with below median stats do not have a better chance by applying ED. ED is where they take most of the athletes, legacies, staff kids, development and children of the famous and powerful.

The unhooked kids who get in after that are those they are afraid of losing to HYPSM in the RD round, not those with below median stats. They are vals and sals with very high scores.

While you have the tip of first gen and come from a less well represented state on one hand, you are an ORM on the other. They could fill the whole college with Asians with 800 math scores and strength in math/science.

In your shoes, I would not apply until I brought the CR score to at least median because you can easily lose your shot RD. Just my two cents.

Hello, Hello, just thought I’d drop a word, since I do take the IB as well and I think this will inject some much needed perspective :P

First of all, WOW you did three sciences! And took the Chem exam as a Junior? O_o brilliant… If colleges knew about the difficulty of this in the IB Program, this would easily put you at the “absolutely most rigorous coursework” category.

And… aside from that, I hate to have not much to say but noreally in the first reply pretty much nails it. You’re Asian, and your app oozes so much math I could swim in it - this, while being great accomplishments in my eyes, does not help much.

If you could shape your essay in that it displays your PASSION for math (since your awards and ECs in math show ACCOMPLISHMENT) in a creative way, then it would round out your application better.

I do hope I’ve helped. ;D

I would appreciate a reply as well -

Thanks for the reply!! I will definitely try to show my passion more. However, I still feel as I’m an all-around person, not just a math “genious”, since I have taken the IB program and succeeded in it, and lead several other organizations.

More opinions please!

I was going to say in at most if not all of them. Then I saw that you were asian. It sounds really bad when I say it like that but unfortunately that’s how it works these days. You fit the stereotype real well. I understand that you are going to try and help yourself stand apart so that you don’t fall into a stereotype. I guess just do your best on that end. Your CR score needs some raising too but you can pull that off.

Hopefully though the cards blow your way though. Its not that your not qualified. Its just that there are too many others who are also. Good luck.

Thanks. I know I do, but I think I am well balanced as well, not someone who is in LOVE with math and can only do math, but someone who is skilled and has an interest in it. More opinions please, they are all appreciated greatly :D

Columbia-ED - Low reach
Duke - Low reach/high match. I’ve seen people with worse stats get in though.
Brown - Low reach/high match
MIT-EA - Reach
Cal-Tech-EA - Reach
Amherst - Match
Wash-U - Match
UCLA - Match
Berkeley - Match/Low reach b/c you’re out of state
Georgetown - Match
University of Washington - Match

are my guesses (: Digging the GPA and SAT!

Columbia ED, I would think, is a low reach for you because of your impressive stats. You’d need more awards/better CR score to improve your chances, but I really think you have a great shot! :)

Your stats are great but not incredible. Nevertheless, you have a solid chance of getting into Columbia.

Thanks for the honest opinions guys :] more is always better! Ill chance back too.

Columbia-ED: reach
Duke: low reach
Brown: low reach
MIT-EA: reach
Cal-Tech-EA: reach
Amherst: low reach
Wash-U: high match
UCLA: low reach
Berkeley: low reach
Georgetown: low reach
University of Washington: in

I’d say you have a pretty decent chance at Columbia, the fact that you have some nice test scores and some good E.C.s helps. I hope that you are very involved with basketball (you mentioned being a youth coach) which is one thing that could somewhat differentiate you from the typical Asian stereotype.

I would say that even though you are an asian male, your EC’s are less asian than the stereotype, you don’t play and instrument, etc…All things considered, I think if you can get that CR score up to a 740 youll have a solid shot at many of the schools on your list.

Chance me?
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/779722-chances-top-schools-will-chance-back.html

Thanks guys! Im happy this thread is continuing to go on :]. I took the ACT on september, and im really hoping for a 34 pushing 35! I am also retaking the sat october to raise that CR score. keep chancing! i chanced back to everyone :]

This ‘asian’ stereotype is something that concerns me, as I am an Asian Female, with strengths in math and sciences. However, I’ve tried to contradict this stereotype by participating in more sports (rugby) and focusing on ‘non asian’ activities that I’m good at. (Ice-skating, service things etc.) My SAT writing score is 760 so I guess that is pretty solid.

Would help if you do the same (:

I come from a relatively noncompetitive school, a slight disadvantage for me, but we have several students each year that have been accepted to Ivy Leagues and Stanford etc. From what I know, I think you have a VERY good shot at those schools. Maybe a reach for MIT and Caltech. The guys who got into Columbia and ILs at my school didn’t have such impressive ecs as you have. Only some individuals had superb scores and ECs. The guy who got into Columbia just had a pretty high SAT scores. He didn’t really have anything else besides that…

You and I do/have similar things (in ECs- typical asian stuff) and leadership lol, except that I haven’t taken my SATs yet and you have taken more rigorous courses than I have. So, best of luck for you. Tell me how it goes next year, what schools have accepted you.
If you know anything about sports, please chance me for Track and Field. Thanks.

Thanks for the chance! Thats very reassuring :]

Columbia-ED: low reach (since ur applying ED)
Duke: low reach
Brown: mid reach
MIT-EA: high reach
Cal-Tech-EA: higher chance than MIT…i know 3 ppl who got into Caltech but not MIT…
Amherst: IDK either
Wash-U: low reach/highish match
UCLA: match/low reach
Berkeley: low reach
Georgetown: match
University of Washington: IDK about this school

raise ur CR score!

Thanks! I will try to, I am signed up to take it October. However, I just took the ACT for the first time and I feel I did really well, ESPECIALLY in reading and english. I am looking at a 34 I think. Hopefully this compensates for the SAT score.

wow you go to thomas jefferson!? (i recognize ‘4th in mao’) anyway… scores are pretty awesome… and extra-c’s rock. colleges will identify pretty much everything you do as “leadership experience.” i honestly don’t think you’ll have a problem getting into anything except columbia (in which case… idk, the only two people from my school who went to columbia got in either on a wrestling scholarship or with a 2390 SAT) but applying ED will help!

oh wait… berkeley… i’m not sure since you don’t live in cali :

anyway, chance me? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/780607-chance-me-vanderbilt-emory-wake-forest.html#post1063250698
