Chance me, please! Computer Science major.

Thus far, these are the classes I've taken and the grades I've gotten in them:

English 100 - B
Chemistry 100 - C
Art 110 - C
Anthro 101 - c
Soc 101 - C
Span 102 - C
Hist 113 - A
Hist 110 - B
Hist 112 - B
Psych 101 - C
Hist 111 - B
Hist 171 - B
POSC 100 - B
History 170 - B
History 165 - A
Math 100 - A
Speech 105 - B
Engl 103 - A
Math 141 - A
Math 142 - A

Math 150 A (Calculus I) - A
CSCI 123 (Intro to C++) - A

CSCI 133 (Data Structures in C++) - A
MAth 150 B (Calculus II) - A
Phys 221 (General Physics I) - A

Math 250 A (Multivariable Calculus)

CSCI 241 (Computer Organization and Assembly Language Programming)
Phys 222 (General Physics II)

CIS 228 (Java Programming II)
Math 250 B (Linear Algebra and Differential Equations)
Math 250 C (Additional Topics in Linear Algebra)
Phys 223 (General Physics III)

Assuming I get all A's in my next 8 classes (as has been my trend), the highest possible GPA I can have is a 3.4.
Also, the reason why you see so many classes listed is because I was planning on transferring with a History major, but when it came time to actually transfer I had a change of heart and decided to pursue my dream in CS rather than take the easy road in History.

Anyway, these are the schools I'm looking into:
UC Berkeley (super-long shot, but I'm not losing anything by just applying)
UC Davis
UC Santa Cruz
UC Riverside
UC Irvine
UC Santa Barbara

Cal State Fullerton
San Diego State
Cal Poly Pomona
Loyola Marymount
Cal State Long Beach
Cal State Northridge

I'm thinking of TAG'ing into either SC or Davis, but I'm still not 100% sure. So, chance me please?

What’s your current GPA?

My current GPA is 3.3.

Berkeley is just not going to happen. I wouldn’t apply to any of the state schools since you are tagging. That’s going to save you around $400. I would say TAG to UCSB and apply to ther other UCs. You have a good chance at Davis and Santa Cruz. I think CS is impacted at irvine so I don’t know. That might be a reach too.
That’s what I would do because I want to go to UCSB. TAG to your first choice!!! If you want to go to UCSC or Davis, TAG to one of those. I’m personally tagging to UCSC

TAG for UCSC for Comp Sci last year was painful. I’d say TAG somewhere else and save yourself the headache, if you can. Last year, it went something like this[/url”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/uc-transfers/1245698-ucsc-tag-engineering-declinded-o-o.html]this. Pretty sure everyone from that thread was accepted and got into CS eventually (around June I think?), but it was a long and frustrating process. So, just a heads up that you might be in for that if you tag SC for CS. :P

Berkeley… don’t feel like you really have a chance at it, but you should try anyways. The others I think you’ve got a good shot at getting in.

After reading that, it’s really discouraging especially knowing that by the end of the Spring I will have absolutely everything they require of me prior to transferring.

And see, I would TAG for UC Santa Barbara but their TAG requires a 3.4 at the time the TAG is submitted, which I don’t have.

If anything, what are my chances at the state schools? Should I be worried?

Also, @failure622 - how did they get in around June?

holyeuphoria: At least for me, I was accepted in the first wave of decisions from SC. Then they label you as being “proposed Computer Science” major. And they don’t tell you whether or not you can actually be a CS major there until the very end of admissions. Think they might have a policy against changing into a major that rejected you later as well, not quite sure. I don’t remember exactly when the “you’re in CS” update happened, because by then I was already accepted at Berkeley. They pretty much kept saying “maybe” through the whole admissions process. And it was really stressful. Santa Cruz made a lot of people worry a lot more than they needed to, basically.

I’m sure you’ve still got a great chance at getting in, just it’s not the best choice of a TAG, if they’re going to treat CS like they did last year. I don’t know about your chances with the state schools, but I’d still say you’re in at UCSC and some of the others you listed, so don’t stress too much. :>

Thanks for the head’s up!

But see, now I’m stressing even more because this whole time I’ve just been going off of what assist.org tells me, but now that I looked into both SC and Davis’ school of Engineering, they both want me to take Discrete Mathematics which I ended up dropping last semester because none of the schools I really wanted to go to had it listed on assist.org, but they have it listed on their websites, meaning I’m going to have to take it next semester. Ugh.

Bump, please chance me, guys. I know Berkeley is a long shot and probably won’t happen, but I’m still stressing out over all the other choices I have.

For TAG in UCSB’s College of Engineering, you only need a 3.4 in major preparatory courses, not overall. Do you have that?

"For the College of Engineering TAG:

…• Earn an overall minimum 3.40 GPA in all major preparatory course work by the end of fall 2012;
• Maintain an overall minimum 3.40 GPA in all major preparatory course work through the end of
spring 2013"

Major prep courses being all the math, physics and programming for the major?

The classes on assist.org

So UCSB only takes into account those classes? If that’s the case, I have a 4.0…

You still have to have a 3.2+ overall. But you only need the 3.4+ for the assist courses. If you have that (and you meet all other requirements), you can TAG to UCSB.

Okay, one last question. Lets say there’s no TAG involved, and I’m just applying to all the schools. What are my chances with a 3.4 GPA to the following?

UC Davis
UC Santa Cruz
UC Riverside
UC Irvine
UC Santa Barbara

Cal State Fullerton
San Diego State
Cal Poly Pomona
Loyola Marymount
Cal State Long Beach
Cal State Northridge

Anyone, please? I’m really freaking out thinking that GPA is too low…

You have a good chance at all the schools assuming your pre-reqs and IGETC will be finished.

Even for some schools like Davis, they don’t care about IGETC and just want pre-reqs.

If you have a lot of pre-reqs, then your 3.4 GPA is good enough for all of those schools on the list.
