Chance Me Please! Do I stand as comptition?

Hello, I am a male indian from Pennsylvania going into my senior year. In regards to money, I am available to pay money for pretty expensive colleges.

Throughout the school year and the summer, I have researched schools that I am thinking of applying to. Some of my reach schools include Johns Hopkins, UPenn, Duke, Carnegie Mellon, UCLA Berkley, and Dartmouth. Some of the schools that I think are a reach but I think I have a chance are Purdue, Emory, Georgia Tech, Rensselaer Polytechnic, Northwestern, and Vanderbilt. Safety schools include Pitt, Temple, Penn State, and Villanova. Ultimately, my goal is to pursue a premed track with the intended major of Computer Science. I have done a considerable amount of research into schools, but even so, the schools listed here are a rough list, and I am more than willing to add more.

In regards to test scores, I received a 35 on the ACT, 12 in the Essay, and have a 780 on subject tests in Physics and Biology M while also having 800’s in Math II and Chemistry.

For AP Classes, I have taken AP Human Geography, AP Biology, AP Government, AP Macroeconomics, AP Calculus BC, AP Language and Composition, AP Physics Mechanics ©, and AP Computer Science. I have scored an A in all of my AP Classes except for BC and Bio, which I got B+'s in.

Senior Year, I will be taking AP Statistics, AP Psychology, AP Literature, AP Chemistry, AP Physics © Electricity and Magnetism, and AP Microeconomics.

For volunteering hours, I have over 300 hours and I am in a high position roll in various clubs (between 5 and 6, with two of them I started on my own). The clubs are not really random; they are ones that pertain to my interest and that I have spent time in for many years.

Now there are three issues with my application that really worry me. First thing, as I have not mentioned yet, is my GPA. Currently, it is a 3.8 on a 4.0 Unweighted Scale, and this is because I moved from one part of Pennsylvania to another at the beginning of my sophomore year. Freshmen year, I had a 4.0 GPA. Then it fell severely in Sophomore year, but I was able to get a 4.0 GPA in junior year. Thus, my GPA is low. Second is my foreign language credits. Technically I only have two. However, in freshmen year, I took Spanish 3, and since then I was not able to fit Spanish into my schedule until Senior Year, which I am now taking Spanish 4. Technically, according to the classes, I have a sufficient knowledge of Spanish, but I just don’t have enough of the credits. Finally, the third issue is my AP Exams. A lot of my AP exams I took in junior year. Because of the large overlap in classes (I took two exams each day for three days; it was unbelievably tiring), I scored roughly in the three to four range for most tests. This looks really bad on my part because it looks like my school has grade inflation.

So essentially, my question is, do I have a chance to get into my reach school choices. I know, people could say that it is not guaranteed for anyone and that nobody knows for sure, but I have absolutely no idea if I even have a chance there or if majority of the colleges are not going to see me as a good candidate. Thank you for reading this large post, and any information that you can give me will be helpful.

If you have any other questions about my application, I will be more than happy to answer.

UCLA and UCB will only use your 10-11th grades in the a-g course requirements for their GPA calculation. OOS applicants do not get extra honors points (weighting) for HS Honors courses only for AP/IB or DE courses taken 10-11th grades.

Here is the UC GPA calculator and please post your Capped weighted and Fully weighted UC GPA:

OOS applicants also need higher stats than in-state applicants and intended major can make a huge difference on your chances. UC’s tend to be more GPA focused vs. test focused.

I think you have a decent list. I would say Purdue and RPI would be matches, not reaches for you. Your reaches are reaches for everyone but you are in the ballpark, and I wouldn’t worry about the AP scores.

My Capped Weight is 4.14 while my weighted GPA is 4.77 according to your calculator. I am not familiar with that scaling. Is that good?

Your capped weighted UC GPA is below the average but your fully weighted UC GPA is on target.

For 2017 Admitted Freshman from OOS:
UCLA: 25th percentile for Fully weighted UC GPA was 4.40 and 75th percentile was 4.80
ACT 25th-75th percentile range: 32-34

UCB: Average weighted UC GPA was 4.44 (50th percentile) Unweighted was 3.92.
ACT 25th-75th percentile range: 32-34

You are a competitive applicant and since money is not an issue, definitely worth applying.

AP scores will be considered by UCB but UCLA does not state if they consider AP scores in their application review. AP scores are self-reported so you can report none, some or all.

The UC’s recommend 3 years of a foreign language but what is important is the level you have reached which is Spanish 3 which meet the requirement.

Best of luck.

The reason that my GPA is so low is because of me moving. Will colleges take this into account in regards to competitiveness or will they not care?
