Is this for real. You’re so fortunate to have that grades. Anyway, you can choose what you want because I know and perhaps, people around you will definitely give you a support.

I am sorry MirandaSmith, but I am not quite sure I understand you. Are you saying I have decent chances in all of the above colleges/universities?

Your EC’s are fine - adcoms know that your education system doesn’t offer as many opportunities for them as American high schools.
How much can your family pay each year? To get your visa, you need to demonstrate that you have all costs covered…including insurance, personal expenses, travel, etc.

What is your major?

What is your M+CR score?

UNC at Chapel Hill - I don’t think they have FA for int’ls.
Wellesley = great school, don’t know how much of a reach w/o knowing your M+CR.
William and Mary = no financial aid for int’ls
Swarthmore = could be a high reach if your SAT doesn’t go up a lot.
Middlebury = reach
Cornell - high reach (lots from your country apply)
Princeton = very high reach…lots from your country apply (save money, don’t apply)
University of Alabama - Depending on your M+CR, could be a high scholarship.
Colgate University - likely…don’t know how good FA for int’ls

If your M+CR is 1400+, then you’d get free tuition from Alabama if you apply NOW…scholarship deadline is Jan 6th, but you’re applying from abroad…so apply TODAY…and SUBMIT the scholarship app…formality, but you must do!!

If your M+CR is 1330+ and you’re an Eng’g or CompSci major, then you also get free tuition…plus 2500 per year.

So, if your parents would pay the other costs, then Alabama is a safety for you.

How many schools can you afford to apply to? How much aid do you need?

Thanks a lot for replying @Catria and @mom2collegekids! @mom2collegekids:
I plan to double major in comp.sci. and psychology (very passionate about both).

My family can cover about 5-6K USD per year. If I get a scholarship, then I would not have to show ability to pay full tuition/boarding/lodging, right? Just the remaining costs?

As far as UNC for Chapel Hill is concerned, do I have any chance of getting the Johnston award? It is almost full ride, but only 70 students get it every year. By the way, I forgot to mention this before, I also did an informal ‘reading course’ with a noted psychiatrist in the previous summer, where I read a complete undergraduate level psychology textbook and discussed the concepts with him. Would this be mentionable somewhere in the application, and would this help it?

Currently my M+CR is 1190(700+490), but I expect it to to easily cross 1450(800+650), since I was very nervous while taking the first test.

That is great news about the free tuition for CompSci majors! Do you have any idea how much my COA would be after that?

I can afford to apply to a maximum of 12 schools, and my parents cannot spend more than 5-6000 USD. I would require aid for the rest.

I have researched further and added the following schools, please let me know what do you think my chances there are:
furman
earlham
skidmore
suny - university at buffalo
Harvey Mudd
Amherst
Vanderbilt
Williams
CMC

Also, there is a full ride scholarship available at UA-Huntsville, but US NEWS reports that the four year graduation rate there is 18%. Should I be worried? I do want to pursue my work seriously and do not want to end up at a party school just because of the full ride scholarship.

plan to double major in comp.sci. and psychology (very passionate about both).

At many schools, you apply as ONE major, and then add the other major after you start school.

For Alabama or UAH, you need to name Comp Sci as your first major to maximize scholarships.

You don’t have to worry about UAH’s grad rate. Some students take longer BY CHOICE. Those who want to graduate in 4 years do.

You may have a problem is your family can only show $5k-6k for your support. A full tuition scholarship doesn’t cover room, board, books and so forth. Can you work over the summer in your country to get more money?

And, as an int’l, you have to show what the school says, even if you can “live cheaper”.

If I get a scholarship, then I would not have to show ability to pay full tuition/boarding/lodging, right? Just the remaining costs?

depends on the scholarship. Most aren’t full rides. Most are for full-tuition or less. Alabama’s is for full tuition plus 2500 per year, but that 2500 will only cover a small amount of room and board.

The dec SAT scores will be out on the 27th.
Even if I work over the summer in India, all I can possibly manage is a measly $400 (which is actually a decent amount in rupees)! So I am basically dependent on a good combination of need and merit based scholarships.

So should I apply to UAH that UA-T with comp sci as major to avail of the full ride scholarship? Is it a good school for comp-sci?

I had read that if accepted, the top LAC’s cover your full need (up to full ride). If this is true, and as you say I have a good chance of acceptance at Colgate, wouldn’t that take care of my money problems?

Also, if possible, let me know how I would fare at those other colleges, and if that reading course with the psychiatrist would help my application.

UNC at Chapel Hill - mid-high reach (no true aid, your scores aren’t high enough for merit aid)
Wellesley - mid reach
William and Mary - mid reach (tough for OOS applicants)
Swarthmore - high reach
Middlebury - low reach
Cornell - high reach (they may have scholarships for indians, but you’re going to be competing with people who have 200 pts higher than you on the SAT)
Princeton - high high reach
University of Alabama: safety (you’ll get a scholarship too)
Colgate University - low reach (financial aid may be a problem)
furman - safety, you’ll get in here but i’m not sure how much aid they give
earlham - safety (I don’t think they have much financial aid)
skidmore - low reach/match (not sure about aid)
suny - university at buffalo - low reach (aid may be a problem)
Harvey Mudd - mid/high reach (this is mainly an engineering/physical sciences school)
Amherst - high reach
Vanderbilt - high reach (aid wouldn’t be a problem if you could get in)
Williams - mid reach (aid may be a problem)

Your list has a lot of reaches, which is fine. You just need to research the amount of aid they give because that is your biggest problem. I would scratch off the high reaches because while they probably give the most amount of aid, they may be a waste of money to apply. There are plenty of low-mid reaches that give a ton of aid, just look around.

. Also that reading course doesn’t exactly mean a ton. You can put it on there if you want, but it’s not exactly anything notable.

Just research some schools with good financial aid or some other “easier” schools to get into so you can get some merit aid, because at a lot of those schools you may not get any.

@hobbithopeful: Thank you for the detailed reply!

The problem is that a lot of southern school that could have been match/safety for me had their deadline either in November or the 1st of December. 'Bama is the only uni I could find that is still accepting applications for scholarships.

I am expecting at least 2100 (1450 Math + CR) on the Dec SATs, so does that change my chances? From your profiling, I think the general trend is that universities/LAC’s ranked lower than about 30-35 are matches and safeties, so I’ll research those.

For Furham, Earlham, Williams, Skidmore, and Colgate, you have said that aid maybe a problem. Do you mean that these places do not generally give full ride to internationals, or that you are unaware of their aid programs? I have researched these quite a bit, and from multiple posts on CC itself I have learnt that people do receive generous aid. Were those isolated incidents and am I mistaken?

If you have any suggestions for match/safety colleges, please let me know. I will of course be researching full time!
