My son will apply this fall for freshman admission to CS. Appreciate any input here:
Class rank: top 15% (all As & Bs, but super-competitive public HS)
ACT: 35 (36 english, 35 math, 34 reading, 36 science)
Will be NMSF
Rigorous courseload: 7 APs so far + 5 next year. Likely will have 5s in AP CS and AP music theory; mostly 4s and 5s otherwise.
ECs: 4yrs band (2 instruments), almost an eagle scout, 12 years piano, NHS, some computer camps and self-initiated computer projects. Also studying music composition on his own (with private teacher) and has a few small compositions.
Essays: he’s a strong writer so I think his will be strong.
Thanks much for any feedback!
Since he is not top 7% his application will be holistically reviewed. There is a formula that you can use to help you start looking at his chances.
I think this is still valid: https://www.utsystem.edu/sites/utsfiles/documents/institutions/best-practice-admissions-processes/ut-system-admissions-best-practices-2014-07.pdf (look at the final pages)
Also since he is not auto- his essays are very important. Hopefully he can write about his passion for CS & why, as a student, he would be an asset for UT.
Great ACT score. Will he take SAT? (assuming so since you say he will be NMSF.) I know for Turing they really look at that math score & the closer to 800 the better.
Good Luck to your son.
Thanks, @bookmom7 ! Anyone else have any input on this? Since my original post, he’s also got a 1580 SAT (790 on each part) and his AP scores came in as predicted. However, his scores on the writing sections of SAT and ACT are not great. He’s also struggling a bit with the essays since this year’s prompts are (imho) weird and unhelpful. Any input or advice?
