Thank you for your help.

Where is your GPA? First take the SAT also, since without that we basically can’t chance you.

Assuming that you perform well on your SAT, you’ll have a relatively decent shot at the Ivies. Ironically, something as cultural as Bharatnatyam is kind of viewed as stereotypical for Indian-Americans to do, but that certainly doesn’t hinder your application. Compelling table tennis interest. Obviously, as you identified, your volunteering is a little weak, but you have time to remedy that.

Kill your SATs, and you’ll be a good candidate for top schools. (You’re in at Sarah Lawrence, by the way.)

Chance me back, please? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/960943-best-chances-worst-chances.html

Um…we dont get a gpa in my school.I think my school’s going to convert marks into grades percentile wise.Taking A as a 90+ percentile…i’ll be having A’s in all my subjects i think.Maybe not economics in 11th though. But I’ll be making it up in senior year…(our senior year started in April).

I can give you a rough estimate for SAT- I can vouch for it to not be under 2000.I know thats not much…butt 2000 is the least i shall score in the worst condition. So…i hope you find that useful. Thanks!

Keasby nights-Thank you for your words  sure i’ll chance you bck! Yeah…i was kinda thinking of sarah lawrence as my safety.

Then tell us what do you get on practice tests for the SAT if you have the official guide or did any practice tests?

Um. I got a 2000 the first time i took a bb practise test.then a 750 on CR when i looked at the bb advice and did the section under timed conditions seperately. Those are the only two tests i have taken.I shall be studying for a month for the SAT in september(im taking it in oct).
Sorry i cant give any more info.yet.

Ok, judging from the practice tests, if you get around a 2000, You will get into Sarah definitely. But its still too soon to judge for the ivys.

Thank you for ur help nothingto! is there any advice you can give to boost my chances??

apply ED to Dartmouth and you’ll have a great chance!!

Awful, just plain wrong advice on this thread.

Sarah Lawrence is in no way a safety for an Indian student seeking financial aid. There are no safeties for such students.

The stadards applied to Indian students are much higher than for domestics because the competition for the few seats top colleges give such students is brutal. The competition from India is extreme to say the least. Those who get the seats are usually top students not just at their schools but in the country.

I would say with a rank of 7% and no national honors, any ivy will be very unlikely. I think you would get into SL, but not with full aid and most probably not even close. For a realistic shot at attending a US college you will have to look below the ivies and focus on schools known to give generous aid. The students on the international board here can help.

I think most of these schools will be reaches :/

Perfect pixie, you should come up with another list of schools that are more realistic for your chances of admission should you get SAT scores anywhere from, say, a 2000 to 2200. Maybe keep one Ivy on your list but most of your schools should probably be A- or B+ schools (academically). Maybe Tufts, Boston College, Fordham, Bucknell, Virginia, or George Washington are such examples? There are many non-ivy league schools with great programs, faculty, etc.

Sarah Lawrence gives decent aid to first-years, but my impression is that the amount of aid awarded drops sharply with each passing year. That could be a real problem.

Maybe consider taking a humanities SATII? Literature (since you’re good at CR) or history or something?

Redroses- thank you for ur straight to the point advice. I do not know much about sarah lawrence actually…so thanks for opening my eyes.
I was ranked 6 in class 11,but in 12th im sure i am going to be rank 1(i was really unwell in 11th…so im happy with my performance).
Oh and i checked with my school councellor and she said my gpa on a scale of four would be around 3.9.( I was rank 3 in class 9.rank 4 in class 10.rank 5 in class 11(and 6th if you look at all the sections together).
Um.My table tennis awards count as National dont they?It was a nationwide competition…??
Could you suggest some schools that give aid generously?

Lizarel-Thanks for telling me that! I wont apply to SL then :)

xrCalico23- what does a ‘reach school’ mean? Sorry…it might sound like a dumb question, but i really do not know.

PS-please dont judge my SAT score on the basis of the single practise test i took because that was the very first(and only) one i have ever taken.(without practice and strategies, etc).Im sure i can build it up to ‘Atleast’ a 2200.
Thanks.

I saw people putting ‘single parent’ and low income as a ‘hook’.

Well should i consider that as my ‘hook’ too??
okay. HOOK(hehe)- Single parent(mom) and low income bracket (my mum’s a school teacher and she brought me up without any support from anybody). The only reason i am what i am today is because of her and the advantages that come from being a teacher’s kid(free schooling and unlimited access to the school library).

I also forgot to put in my OP-Im an international student.

Im sorry for making so many late additions!
…its just that im new to this.

Buuump??..

Good awards, ECs.
If you get a 2300+ on your SATs 780+ on your Math II, I’d say that HYP would be reaches (as for everyone) and you’d have a good chance at Dartmouth and Cornell.
Maybe write about table tennis, it looks like a passion of yours.
