I am applying for RD BME and Biology. If I don't get into BME, will I still have a chance for Bio?

Thank you in advance.

I think you have good chances but in terms of competitiveness (not sure how honest you want opinions to be) your scores and grades might be slightly lower than some other applicants for BME.
Your commitment to Islamic studies and community service is clear which is great.
I also did the Columbia bio program myself, LOVED it, truly a great program.
I think your essays will be the best place to show just how much you’d love to be a JHU student and increase your chances.

As for your “hook”, just a personal question, will being a semi first generation be clear to the ad coms?

Best of luck on JHU!

Yeah I realize my scores may be slightly on the low side for BME. To be honest, I put BME as first choice even though I actually want to do pre-med…but I want to have a chance to discover BME as well…so yeah, I won’t be devastated if I don’t get in to BME. Thank you for your feedback. I am afraid that my GPA may be to low as the UW is only 3.3, although my weighted is pretty good at 4.2.

I have wanted to go to JHU since I started High School and I believe my supplemental essays show that. As for my common app essay, I am focusing on who I am as a person. Once again, thanks for feedback!

Edit: Did you do the bio program this year? Perhaps we were in it together! and I agree it was a terrific program.

Btw as for my hook, I am the first one from my family to fully enroll in a university. My dad went to college however he just did a special program (it’s different in Pakistan apparently).

No problem! :)

I did the program last year, so unfortunately we weren’t in it together. I did have F.Ciula as my classroom teacher, not sure if you had him, but he is one hilarious/great prof - wrote my rec for Columbia actually.

Your essays sounds great, I’m sure it will show to the ad coms! :)

I really hope JHU works out, you seem like a enthusiastic candidate. My parents went to college in a different country but then did grad here so technically I’m the first undergrad to attend college in the states but I’m not sure if that counts.

as for pre-med, grad school is usually (from what relatives and friends have experienced) the most important. JHU tends to try and take less students from their school as grads and try to “diversify” by taking students from other schools. I think great internships, understudies, and experience in college will go far for the pre-med track. As for a slightly easier (but not really) rout, have you looked at Georgetown? they have a great pre-med concentration program, instead of a major so you could major in something else and have a pre-med concentration in your schedule.
Good luck with everything SMRSMR!

Wow I also had Mr. Ciulla and I agree he was a great/funny professor; learned a lot in his class and also had him write a letter to Columbia. Great guy.

Anyways yes I am aware that Pre-med is undergrad and what truly matters is grad school for med however I want to experience JHU. I have already sent out all of my physical supplements so I can’t really apply anywhere else. Hopefully everything works out for me, thank you for the support!

One more question, if I am not accepted into pre-med, there is still a possibility that I will be accepted into JHU right?

Edit: I was wondering if you were interested in helping me decide which common app essay to submit. I have written two however I am uncertain on which one truly shows who I am. If you are, I can PM you the essays.

I would say no on BME and I think general admission is a high target / low reach. Your SAT IIs are solid and you seem to really want to go to the university.

Hopkins Medical School does not actively discriminate for or against Hopkins undergraduates. With that said, an unusually large percentage of Hopkins Med students were Hopkins undergraduates simply because they tend to be excellent candidates. I think you’d find that Hopkins undergrads are overrepresented at all the top medical schools (and well represented at top law and graduate schools)

Though depending on the rest of your app, there’s not reason why you wouldn’t have a possibility. :)

If you are comfortable with another student applying to JHU reading it, I wouldn’t mind, except I don’t know how much help I will be. I, however, am interested in east asian studies and international relations. If you are comfortable, I’d be happy to help you decide which essay, from a person with zero knowledge about you, would show more personality and sense of self.

I would prefer if an already accepted/currently enrolled student look at my essay, no offense! I am just very torn between the two. So is anyone willing to help?

No worries, that’s why I wanted to be clear and make sure. There are copiers out there so beware! Best of luck! :)

Thank you, I have been able to decide on my own :D

Hey best of luck to you too, hopefully we both get in!

I’m a current student (but I’m not a BME), and I’d be willing to read your essay.

I have PM’d you my essay. Be honest, and thank you!

I’m an accepted into both the college and BME, if you PM your essay I would be willing to read it, and tell you what I think.

assalamu’alaykum

Well, I think that you have a really solid chance given your school and personal background. I would work really hard on the essays and improve them to have my chance solidified. Make sure your recommendations (counselor + teachers) are EXCELLENT and speak highly of you. Your ECs are definitely going to help a lot but for Hopkins, I am not sure if BME will be a readily awarded major to you. It’s not good that you have no job/work experience!
BME is like Harvard of Hopkins and you never know when you get in. Looking at your stats, it looks like you might get accepted, but again, I am not sure if you will specifically be in BME. Your chances for the other major seem high and well.

Rest assured, your summer program & intern will def. help a LOT! Keep a strong focus on the short answer questions. They really are looked upon and might be a deciding factor of your admission.
Hope to see you @ Hopkins next year!
(Make lots of du’aa  )

BTW, I am an accepted student, so I can read over your essays too.

hey assalmualikum
so you go to hopkins?
how is the MSA there?

As a student who has gone through the college admissions process, and is currently a Hopkins undergrad, I can honestly say that admissions at the nations top 15 universities (such as JHU) are a crapshoot. You could have great test scores or grades or extracurricars or reccomendations or essays but I can guarentee you that 300 other kids have an application which is as good or superior to yours. My advice is to apply to at least 10 of the top 15 universities in the nation (assuming that you actually WANT to go there - it shouldn’t be all about rank), to maximize your chance of admission since all these schools have sub 20% admissions rates and are really tough to get into…
Good luck!

That is actually good advice, and I understand that chances are slim for everyone. I am just hoping to get lucky and be given a chance. Anyway I applied to about 5 other top 20 schools, fingers crossed. And thank you!

@ danish
wa’alaykum assalaam bro
I was accepted in the ED program for the class of 2015 so I yet have to see in-person how the MSA is like. But through the MSA’s website: JHUMA[/url”>http://www.jhu.edu/jhuma/]JHUMA , they look pretty good as compared to other (relatively inactive, I should say) MSAs in other universities. Here’s what they say about their events:

"In addition to Jummah (Friday) prayer every week on campus, we have educational Halaqas (discussions), game nights, and other social activities to strengthen the Muslim community at Hopkins. During Ramadan we hold daily suhoors and iftars and during the spring we invite knowledgeable speakers from across America to participate in our Islam Awareness Days, a series of events to increase knowledge of our religion amongst the rest of the university. We also hold our largest event of the year then: the annual Spring Banquet, featuring a renowned guest speaker and entertainment - a great time for students, faculty, friends, and families. Heres a list of events we have coming up in the next few weeks:

JHUMA(JHU Muslim Association) will be relatively inactive for the summer, but please check back often to find out about events as we plan them!"

Of course if you want to learn more about them, you can do so by going there and checking them out yourself, but I have high hopes that they are active and helpful in accommodating everything for Muslim.
Hope to see you there too! ;)

I’ve also been accepted ED if you need anyone to read over an essay or help you write one
