Chance Me Please (Honors Program)

I am a white male from California. I will have two varsity letters in soccer, about 100 hours of community service, a bit of work experience through refereeing and will have been enrolled in nine AP classes by the time I graduate. I also am taking my 5th year of Spanish this year. Since eighth grade I've taken Spanish I, Spanish II, Spanish III, AP Spanish Language and AP Spanish Literature. I have been told that looks good so I figured I'd add it. Also, I am fairly confident I will get into UM however I really want to know whether or not I can get into the honors program.
9-12 Academic Unweighted GPA: 3.68
9-12 Academic Weighted GPA: 3.91
10-12 Academic Unweighted GPA: 3.71
10-12 Academic Weighted GPA: 4.04
ACT: 30
Thank you so much!

It depends on what college you are going to apply to because the requirements are different for the various colleges. Here is a link that I found that gives the academic profile of students admitted to the honors program broken down by college (you will have to scroll down a little bit - the chart is located at the bottom of the page):

[Honors Program Review and Selection Process](University Honors Program | Office of Admissions)

As you can see, there is a little bit of a range. For CSE, the average ACT score of an honors student is over 34, but for CFANS it is 30. So depending on what college you are applying to, you may have a chance. You can compare your ACT score and your high school class rank against the academic profile for admitted honors students and see where you stand. This data was for the Freshman class of 2012.

To further help you, here is a link that gives you the academic profile of all admitted students per college:

http://admissions.tc.umn.edu/academics/profile.html

I was unable to edit my post, and I just wanted to add that the profile for admitted students is for the Freshman class of 2013.

Ok thanks that helps so much! The major I am applying for is Economics so I am guessing low reach to reach. (ACT 31.3, mine is 30) My high school does not rank so that can’t be compared.

@kjwaldal - When do you apply? Fall 2014?

Yes, Fall 2014

@kjwaldal ~ If you don’t get into the honors program as a Freshman, you can always apply after your Freshman year. See more at this link:

[Admission After Freshman Year - Future Students - University of Minnesota](Admission After Freshman Year | honors)

It looks like the requirements are pretty high though. You need a minimum GPA of 3.5 to even apply to the program, and the students who are admitted have an average GPA of 3.85. You should be a pretty good match of being accepted to the university though. Your ACT score of 30 is higher than the average ACT of current admitted Freshman for CLA which is 27.6% Since your high school does not rank, I don’t know how they will compare you to the average high school class rank in CLA which is currently top 16.3%.

Ok wow thank you that is very helpful information! I really appreciate it.
