Hi I am an Asian American male from Dallas. I will be a senior next year. My college choices are as follows:
Stanford
Harvard/Yale
Duke
Rice
Washington University at St. Louis
Carnegie Mellon
Emory
Wake Forest
Georgia Tech
Tufts
New York University
Tulane
UT Austin (safe-automatic acceptance)
Personal Info:
Weighed GPA: 4.624
Unweighted: 3.99
Rank: 2 / 550
National Merit Index: 223 (hoping for Texas semi-finalist)
SAT: 1570
ACT: 36
AP Classes: have taken 9, will take 6 more next year
Music: Violin-5th in regionals
Activities: Mock Trial (Captain)-got to the regional finals, Orchestra (Vice-President), National Honors Society (President), Science UIL District Champs
Note: I have not won any major state/national level prizes so will that severely hurt my chances with my top choice colleges?
Again this is my first time doing something like this so any feedback is much appreciated!!!
Addition for Community Services: I volunteer at the Children’s Hospital, Adapted Recreation, and my Church’s Vocation Bible School. I currently have about 260 hours and will have over 300 by the end of the summer.
I think you have good chances at getting into more than half of that bottom clump of schools you listed, congrats! But with the two other clumps of schools, Idk. My biggest worry I have is that after reading your post, I have no idea what you want to major in. You didn’t list it, and I cant gauge it from your ec’s- and that’s troublesome- those top schools want passion- a passion shown through ec’s and essays. And as it stands I do not see it, which is perfectly fine, but I figured I would give you a heads up.
@Harpguy2022 is correct-OP needs to show more passion/a potential major.
The profile I see is of the stereotypical Asian male with high GPA/test scores and generic ECs (minus math contest results/science research). Nothing wrong with that, but OP needs to make himself more compelling and interesting enough for the adcom at HYPS to get admitted.
thank you so much for the evaluation. your comments are spot on. I have done research over two summers in neuroscience and material science. I am hoping to major in biochemistry or bioengineering at Duke/Rice
thanks for the insightful comments. I have done research over 2 summers in Neuroscience and Material science and while that may put me deeper in the Asian Stereotype hole I have also tried to get involved in the community and school (mock trial and NHS)
This is hilarious to me because I know another person from my school named David Wang who had very close stats as you, even extracurriculars. lol!
