Chance me please? I'll Def Chance Back!

Hi everyone! First of all, thanks for reading this post. I realize that it's nearly impossible to say for sure whether someone gets in or not, I just want your honest personal opinions. I wondered if you guys could chance me for merit scholarships at these places (they all have some except for Stanford)

Schools I applied to: Duke, Emory, JHU, Rice, Stanford, University of Miami, Vanderbilt, WashU (in St. Louis)

Senior at HS, Planning on majoring in Bio/Neuroscience or something related and possibly med school in the future.
Male from Wisconsin
Race: Asian Indian, lived in India for 7yrs before coming to the US.
Competitive Public HS (Top 1 or 2 in state)
Rank: 4/323
GPA: 3.987 UW, 4.814 W (4=reg classes, 5=honors/AP)

PSAT: 221
ACT: 36 (Reading-36, Science-36, Math-35, English-36, Essay-8)
SAT: 2290 superscored, 800 CR, 740 M, 750 W, Essay-8 (could be higher, but whatever)
SAT IIs: 780 Bio-E, 760 Chem, 700 Math II (Math is horrible, Bio and Chem are OK)

Hardest courseload available (and I mean HARDEST): 11 APs, all others honors except band/gym.

AP Tests (All 5's)-Calc BC, Env. Sci, Bio, Both Econs, US History, Euro, Human Geo, US Gov, AP Lang, Stats.

Senior Schedule: Taking 7 AP's: Physics C (both Mech and E&M), Chem, World, Art History, Lit, Psych, Comp Gov. Took an online class (Multivariable Calc) @ community college and got an A.

EC's/Honors:
National Ocean Sciences Bowl: Won the national championships, probably biggest thing, Co-captain this year.
HOSA: 1st in state in 3 different events and 2nd for another one, went to nationals and placed in top 16 teams for 2 events I did, President this year.
National Science Bowl: State Champions but couldn't go to nationals b/c it was the same time as NOSB (that sucked), Captain for 2 yrs.
Science Olympiad: Top 5 in state for various events.
JETS TEAMS: Placed 3rd at state in Junior/Senior division.
Green Team: Vice Pres, raise awareness in community, nothing too major though.
Research on Porcupine Ecology at local Wildlife Center last two years.

Volunteering:
Receptionist at local hospital for last 2 years, (>100 hrs)
Work at American Cancer Society Hope Lodge (provides free housing for cancer patients, >50 hrs)
Volunteer through National Honor Society (about 75 hrs)

Sports:
Played Varsity Tennis for 3 yrs, and Varsity Swimming for 2 yrs, nothing too special tho.

Other Awards:
Natl Merit Semifinalist (probably Finalist)
AP Natl Scholar
Honor Roll all 4 yrs at HS
NCTE (National Council of Teachers in English) Achievement Awards in Writing Finalist
Finalist for TASP (Telluride Association Summer Program)

Essays: Solid, if not AMAZING. CommonApp one was ok, basically talked about experiencing a new culture when coming to the US, generic but well written. The supplements I thought were really good, esp. the ones for Stanford, Emory, and JHU.
Reccomendations: Two from teachers; they both like me a lot and I've had them for 2-3 years, so they should be good. For the counselor one, I don't know him as well as my teachers, but he likes me, so it should be fairly good if somewhat generic since he does a lot.

Basically, I'm pretty strong academically, esp. in math and science as shown by my EC's but i'm decent across the board, which i hope my HS curriculum and AP scores show. I think my EC's (including volunteering and sports) are ok, but not great compared to top applicants, esp for Stanford.

I would love to go to any of these schools, but I already got accepted to my state school (Madison) which is really good too. I don't know if attending any of these would justify the extra cost, so I'm probably not going to go if i don't get merit scholarships. The only ones i would even consider going for full price are Stanford, Duke, and JHU. I would say I have a <20% chance at Stanford (reach) and 50-75% chances at other schools (low match to low reach), and a <10% chance for any scholarships.

Thanks again for reading this, sorry it's so long. Tell me what you think, and if you need to be chanced back, I'd be glad to do it.

I’d say you have a great shot at Emory, Vandy, Miami, Rice, and Duke. I don’t know too much about JHU, but I do know a lot about Stanford.
Stanford is ridiculously competitive, because they literally want the well-rounded student. They don’t care if you have a 4.8, but no ECs. You seem to NOT be this type of person. You appear very well rounded, and your multi-cultural background should help you out. My sister works in the admissions office at Stanford and they literally want someone who is multi-racial and not from the Bay area. I think you appear to be a great Stanford candidate, but then again nothing is guaranteed with that school. The valedictorian from my school(2 years ago) got a 2400, had amazing ECs, and got into Harvard…but not Stanford.
Best of luck! Wherever you end up, they will be extremely lucky to have you!

Your application looks great! You have great shots at wherever you go.

Duke - Match/Reach
Emory - Match
JHU - Match
Rice - Match
Stanford - Reach for everyone
University of Miami - Safety
Vanderbilt - Match
WashU (in St. Louis) - Match

Could you chance me back please?

You’re pretty much in at all of them but stanford as it is a crapshoot. Honestly, you are an extremely competitive candidate and you shouldn’t worry about a thing. Your ECs and stats are amazing , and your multi-racial background is sure to help. Good luck!!

Thanks for the insightful response, elizabeth1994! Do you really think that my multi-racial ethnicity will be a bonus at Stanford? I had always assumed that being Asian was a negative (or at least, it doesn’t help you out) at top colleges, since they are ORM’s. But I did live in India before coming to the US, so I don’t know. I would be interested in hearing your take on this. Thanks again!

I think affirmative action works against you, if you’re asian as in Korean (like me) lol…

But really, your stats and awards are amazing. You’ve definitely got a shot in all the schools. But then again, JHU and Stanford are pretty unpredictable. But I’d say you’ve got a shot in all of them!

Chance me please!

I’d say you have a great chance at any school you applied; I’m actually surprised you didn’t apply to HYP.

Stanford is hard to get in for anyone, but the rest of the schools? I don’t see any reason why they’d reject you.

Yeah, I’m not really sure why I didn’t apply to HYP or any of the Ivies really. I guess it’s b/c Stanford is absolutely my top choice and I think that I would be just as happy at some of the other schools I applied to which are a bit less competitive. I guess it was because I knew that I didn’t have great chances to getting accepted, so I just didn’t bother with them. I know it seems a little counter-intuitive - if I know I have low chances of getting accepted to the Ivies, shouldn’t I apply to a lot to boost my chances? But I guess it’s because I didn’t care for them too much over the other schools I applied to (again can’t really explain this). I basically didn’t want to put myself through the stress/anxiety which i’m kind of feeling for Stanford but not really for the other schools because they’re less competitive than the Ivies. So yeah, it’s a weird reason, but it makes sense to me.

Wow! I’d be surprised if you got rejected from any of the schools, and maybe even Stanford. All schools you listed are a match since you have fantastic EC’s(sports&science&volunteering–I’m jealous!) and academics, but Stanford, as others have said, is a reach for everyone because admission seems so “random.” Anyways, good luck!!

Math II score might hurt you if you are majoring in a science related field but your ACT score/GPA are impressive. From what I heard from my mentor, Duke emphasizes a lot on GPA, SAT/ACT scores, and competitions so I think you have a very good shot at Duke.

(Note: My belief is that any college above Top 20 is a reach/match. I don’t think any of them can be considered safeties. That’s just ridiculous.)

Duke - match
Emory - match
JHU - match
Rice - match
Stanford - reach (pretty much on the same level as all other Ivies, but from what I heard Stanford expects applicants to be involved in entrepreneurship … not sure)
University of Miami - in
Vanderbilt - match
WashU (in St. Louis) - match

This looks fantastic~ You’re NOSB Championships and other accolades are brilliant. Like previously mentioned, match everywhere except Stanford. They only accepted 6 people from North Carolina two years ago. D: But I do think you have great chances!

Please chance me! http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1272925-chances-duke-ivies.html

Good Luck bro. Your gonna do to a great school. If some luck goes your way, maybe even Stanford.

Other than Stanford with is just unpredictable, you have a greaaaat chance at the schools you applied to. Maybe even Stanford!
