Chance Me Please (in-state hs applicant)

I’d like to get into Economics, Business, or Accounting at UT and would like to see my chances there if anyone could help please. Thank you in advance for the help

Scores:
ACT: 31 (Eng:31 Math:34 Reading:30 Science:29)
SAT: 1430 (760 Math, 670 Reading) - I get scores back from the next one and am expecting even higher
Class Rank: 63/754. Transcripts come back July 21st. Last year I was 8.3%, now I am expecting top 7% (auto-admit) with all A’s and a huge class of 750 people. I have to go up 12 spots and I think I did)
GPA: 6.61/7 (That was good for top 4% before this year, but they havent released rank for applications)

Classes:
AP Physics, AP Human Geo, AP Calc BC, AP Stat, AP Psych, AP Govt, AP Economics, AP Computer Science

ECs:

  • School baseball team for 2 years, quit because I lost interest and wanted to focus more on school work
    -NHS
  • Part of CATSS (Volunteer Service)
  • Young Life Leader, help freshman get closer to god and meet 2-3 times a week.
  • Mu Alpha Theta (Math Honors Society)
  • NHS

Please let me know if I am missing anything important!

Top 7% is auto-admit. You’re in! At least to UT. McCombs admission is competitive after admit, so good work on improving the ACT/SATs.

Say I didn’t end up getting top 7%… say i’m like 7.01% what are my chances then?

@colev22
I’d say it’s about the same as an individual who’s not auto admit.

But I think you have a decent shot for economics. Not too sure about business.

UPDATE:

I am now 49/768 good for top 6.4%. My new SAT I actually went down to a 1400 but my CR went up to a 690. I dont think ill send that one but I took it.

I honestly think im just shooting for McCombs now. What are my chances with these stats?

ACT: 31 (Eng:31 Math:34 Reading:30 Science:29)
SAT: 1430 (760 Math, 670 Reading) - I get scores back from the next one and am expecting even higher
Class Rank: 49/754. 6.4%

ECs: Young Life (leadership position), CATSS (volunteer service), NHS and Math Honors Society.

Please let me know! I think my chances are decent with my scores. The 760 math and 34 math should help me quite a bit for business right?

Submit both ACT and SAT scores. UT will use whichever gives you the highest Academic Index score. Yes for McCombs and Cockrell your math scores are more heavily weighted for the AI. For the ACT UT uses your math and combined English/Writing score.

@colev22 New SAT scores are believed to be inflated. So I wouldn’t bet on your 760 on the new math SAT to be the same as the math SAT of the old version.
Class rank is alright. Last year the average for class rank was 7% from what I’ve heard.
Also, for the ACT, what did you get on the essay? McCombs weighs the writing and essay combined on the ACT formula. Depending on how you did on the essay, it could either hurt your chances or help them.

My essay was awful I had a 23.

I took it a first time and got a 32 english, 32 math, and 24 essay but the composite is a 30.

I will definitely submit both. I understand about the inflated scores I just wanted to know if the 34 and 760 would help a lot for business since theyre pretty high.

What are my chances would you guys say for getting into McCombs?

On the AI formula for ACT, your Eng Comp Score is a 29 I believe, assuming that your subsection scores on the essay were 8s.

First off you should know enough about UT that if you get into McCombs you start off in Undeclared Business. I would send in all of your scores. I think McCombs particularly cares about the combined Math Reading score so send in the scores even if the overall was meh if it will raise your combined. I had a shit essay score on my ACT and I don’t think they really cared because the average was good. I would try and put as many leadership positions on your application even if they are fluffy. A admissions officer quoted the average number of leaderhship positions held to me, soooo

@squid77 What was it?

And is this for BHP or just McCombs in general

@squid77 thank you I will definitely put a ton of leadership positions. I’m glad that you got in that gave me hope because of how awful my essay was haha.

@TheAvidSeeker It’d be McCombs in general. If I have a chance at BHP then please tell me. I’d definitely apply or do whatever it is to get in there.

There’s formulas they use to calculate your Academic Index. For the ACT, it’s math and your combined English and essay.
So yes the essay does count. Perhaps squid just had a really good math score to counteract his essay.

So once you calculate your Academic Index what next? Is there a cutoff?

In addition to the Academic Index there is also a Personal Achievement Index. The PAI is the score for your essays,ECs and any special circumstances. Search CC for AI/PAI and it should bring up some posts that explain how they are used. There is no AI cut off per se. Yours is compared to other applicant’s for the number of spots available in the major you are applying for.

Any last minute responses as i turn in my app?

Good luck on your journey. What you do with the opportunities you find is far more important than any school or major.

My daughter who was accepted at McCombs had an ACT score of 30. what really helped her was her class rank–2%. I think you have a good chance but do spend a lot of time on the essays (she turned in 3 instead of 2), letters of recommendation and expanded resume.

Focus on McCombs because BHP is a reach. BHP students rank 3% and ACT much higher than what you have right now.Be strategic on what you write on the 1st and 2nd choices for your major. You don’t want to put 1st choice BHP and 2nd choice Business because BOTH are highly competitive.

Ok sorry yall I promise this is the last time I bring this back up. Decisions come out Friday so please any responses would be great.

1st choice was - McCombs
2nd choice was - COLA for Econ
