I am going to apply early action, and I'm really hoping to get in. Does it help that I'm applying as a composition major?

I NEED TO GET IN

I would say yes. But your essays need to be very good.

Please somebody

Carolina seems looks very closely at the rigor of your classes, your performance in them (GPA) and your class ranking. In addition, they take a comprehensive look at the person and experiences they would bring to the incoming class.

I am a little unclear about your High School experience. Did you attend the NC School of the Arts? Just your sophomore year or have you remained there? I understand that the school has a very good track record of placing well qualified students.

The music festivals and travel are quite appealing and the experiences could make for a compelling essay.

Based on your backgraound you may be able to submit supplemental materials hightlighting your musical accomplishments.

It looks like you have a solid shot. Your GPA could be higher. Your SAT score at 1850 puts you below the mean of about 1940, probably in the lower third or so. Hopefully you will see some improvement on your latest test.

As a comparison, my daughter had lower SAT (1810), higher GPA (3.96 UW, 4.6 W), top 2% of class of 400 in public school, strong ECs, much travel (including international), humanitarian work, strong teacher recommendations, etc. She applied early decision, was acceopted and enrolled this fall as part of the class of 2016!

Like “luke8ball” said, make sure that your essays are very good. Also, make sure that you have strong recommendations and make good grades this fall semester. You should have a very solid chance when admission offers are announced. Good luck!!
