Chance me please! It would make me feel better :P

I'd just like to know my chances since this is one of my top schools.

Planned Major: Business (Accounting)

Top 100 in the country's high school. Very competitive magnet high school. Not sure if it makes a difference though. >> It did half kill me, going there.

my school's transcripts gives TWO GPA's, these are Academic only

GPA 9th- 12th (weighted): 4.13

Total GPA (9-12) (unweighted): 3.52

UC GPA: roughly 3.7

School doesn't rank but I know I'm in the 30th percentile.

All of my community service is probably no more than 120 hours ><

Essays: I would like to think these are pretty strong >< but some of my other classmates wrote pretty DARN GOOD essays.

One essay was about my experience in school in China. I talked about how it made me more independent. It was a pretty strong essay (I hope).

The second essay was about how I wanted to explore the world outside my small city, and that made me want to apply to schools outside of southern california.

I also wrote a short paragraph noting that I had a reaaaally big drop in my GPA sophmore year (2.8 GPA) because after I came back from China, I wasn't really prepared to come back up to the standard of work that my home high school had. But in junior year, I really brought it up with straight A's (and 1 B)

Thanks a bunch for reading through all this!

“The second essay was about how I wanted to explore the world outside my small city, and that made me want to apply to schools outside of southern california.”

lulz

^lol, oops. wonder how that’s going to turn out.

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

haha sorry, i copied that over from another college thread, i changed it for uc’s and made it about how i would want to move out from my small town, to a bigger city

Since you’re a Go player, I’ll put some real heart into this (we should play sometime, do you have a KGS account?)

Well, first of all UC campuses look at one SAT sitting only, so I’m guessing that your score will be 800+670+730. They also focus on your top two SAT Subject scores History and Literature (730+720).

The closest thing UCLA has to a business degree is “business economics” and from what I understand (this is my planned major as well), there’s no concentrations in this major. So, I don’t really know where you got the idea that there is a business major in accounting.

Now, good news first. You’re a California resident, hurrah! That is one of the most subtly important factor of application to UC. Your SAT score is well within range and your SATII scores are decent. Well, remember to grade essays not based on how they sound (all nice and grammatically correct) but based on the content (i.e. the message of the personal statement). You can be magnificently eloquent about sleeping, but it wouldn’t be half as impressive (a sleeping essay will probably prove to be detrimental) as a succinct essay about fundraising $1000 for a local charity. Your essay topic sounds interesting, though. It seems very unique.

Bad news:
Your UC GPA is painfully low. I’m pretty sure there is some leniency with regards to your attendance at a magnet school, but you can forgive such a low GPA only so much. People in this GPA range (3.7-3.99) only had an 8% acceptance rate last year*; adjusting for the range, it’s probably more like 6% for 3.7 GPA. Your awards aren’t really very impressive since they only reiterate your achievements - I’m guessing the only criterion for honor roll is GPA. Both the AP and the National Merit Commendation are also just purely number based awards, so they’re not very impressive either. Of course, they still have some weight (they are awards, after all), just not as much as a prestigious scholarship or something of the like. Community service might as well be measured in pennies for all their worth; community service participants are a dime in a dozen (more like a dozen in a dozen). Your extracurriculars are decent, but the summer internship really catches my eye. I can only hope that you elaborated on the experience in one of your essays.

In short:
SAT - Good
GPA - Low
EC - Decent
Essay - ???

Depending on your essay, I would put your chance at around 15-25%… good luck!

Isn’t Biz Econ just Econ + accounting?

That was the case for UCSB, which is why the renamed Business Economics into Economics and Accounting. Here is the description from UCLA:

The B.A. program offers a major for students seeking a business orientation in their study of economics. It does not replicate the traditional undergraduate business school curriculum. Instead, it offers a more tightly focused curriculum that is guided by the rigorous logic and integrative perspective of economics. It is designed to prepare students for graduate education in business, economics, and law. The program requires students to include specific courses offered by the department and the John E. Anderson Graduate School of Management.

So basically, Business Economics = Economics + Business…

But on the whole accounting thing, I do remember that accounting is a possible minor for undergraduates.

[UCLA Business Economics](http://www.econ.ucla.edu/undergraduate/majors/bizecon.html)
[UCLA Economics Major](http://www.econ.ucla.edu/undergraduate/majors/econ.html)

The only real differences are the MGMT courses, which are essentially accounting.
