Chance Me Please! Ivy Leagues

Hi everyone! I’ve read a lot of CC articles throughout my life but I figured it was finally time to make my own account and post my own stats now that I’m a senior. Any and all advice is appreciated!

Background: My interests have wavered between music and science since middle school. I’ve finally decided on science and I’m grateful for the life I’ve had that led me to this decision, but I almost feel like I “wasted time” on music when I could’ve been developing a science “spike.” I still love music though. I specifically like conservation science and public health because I’m super into helping people and conserving the natural world. I’m looking for an enlightening education that will help me help others. I also really like chemistry and comp sci. I’ve been deferred from Harvard and rejected from MIT so far, and JHU comes out the day after I post this. I’ve been accepted to FSU and UF, both on full rides and automatic acceptance to honors. I applied to most of the ivy leagues as well as Vandy, Duke, Emory, JHU, and some others. I’ll post the stats that I specifically put in my college applications.

-SAT II: 800 on Bio M, 790 on Bio E, 800 on Math II, 790 on Chem

-GPA & Rank: 4.0/4.0 UW, 4.66/4.0 W & 13th out of 488 (not a single B on transcript)
-APs: 5s on Enviro, Bio, Calc AB, Chem, Lang, HUG, Music Theory (both subscores), psych, USgopo; 4s on Macro, Stat, APUSH; 3s on Physics 1, Physics 2, World History

-Brevard Summer Institute 2016 & Eastern Music Festival 2017
-Florida All-State: 5 consecutive years;
-internship at MagLab: Temporal Study on Acidic Species from Deepwater Horizon Tar Balls; started senior year; I noted my name would be on a published article about this research
-Science Fair 2018 (research at MagLab): 2nd place at regional in chem category; Stockholm Water Prize recipient; going to state
-Rowing: sophomore year only  3rd in state in Junior 8+ and 3rd at erg sprints as lightweight novice

Recommendations: I got lots of recommendations from STEM and music teachers alike. I think the recommendations from my high school teachers were 7/10 (I chose not to see them) but I eventually got recommendations from my college teachers. Programming teacher was probably 10/10 and conservation bio was probably 7/10. Music teachers were no less than 8/10. Counselor recommendation was probably average. Additional rec from Lab mentor 8/10.

Essays: I think both my common and supplemental essays were true to who I am, but I’m generally bad at writing essays (see test scores above) so they were probably average. My dad liked them at least…

Supplements: I submitted art supplements and research supplements everywhere I could.

Whew that’s it. It feels like I just gave birth. Looking forward to everyone’s feedback!

Your objective statistics certainly meet the high standards put forth by the top schools. You found a research internship that ties into what you are intending to study in college. You have a decent load of extra-circulars and put in the time that will show dedication. In other words, you did basically everything right to put yourself in position to get into top 15 schools. Getting deferred from Harvard and rejected by MIT obviously shows how difficult it is to actually get accepted to the top schools. That being said, it is very likely that you will get into a few of the Ivy League schools, and possibly two of the Vanderbilt, Duke, Emory, or Johns Hopkins. It’s very difficult to predict which schools you will get into because the application rates are so low and it would be dangerous to assume any acceptances at schools that let in fewer than 10% of their applicants. Again, you did everything right to put yourself in the position to be a serious candidate for acceptance, so hopefully you can reap the benefits of your hard work. Good luck!

@BingBong284 You’re absolutely right about how hard it is to predict acceptance to any these schools! And thanks for the rest of your comment, it’s definitely relieving to hear at least one person say I “did everything right.” I hope I’ll be able to report some good news by the end of the month haha

From your post it looks like you would do very well at UF and FSU. Don’t expect either to be easy, but obviously you are well prepared. Good luck with your other applications, and congratulations. Also, relax, you are already in at two great schools while you wait to hear from the others.

@DadTwoGirls Thanks for your comment! I would say that FSU is a safety and UF is a match, the rest being reaches. Based on my current classes at FSU I definitely agree that neither schools would be easy, and of course my success depends on how much /I/ challenge /myself/. But thanks again and I’ll definitely try to relax lol!

You are a very competitive applicant. Your stats and ECs are great. With good essays and letters of recommendations, you could get accepted to any of these schools

@doorrealthe That’s good to hear, thank you! I hope my recommendations are good then haha

Correction***
I checked back and GPA is only 4.629/4.0. Had a brainfart. My apologies!
