Hey I was on here reading some gatech applications, I thought I would put mine as well. I just applied couple days ago as a EA. First of all I’m really really new with the education system, with the SAT, with the Essay, with America and its differences to be honest.
International Student from Turkey, Turkish
Moved 2 months ago to Macon,GA
White, Mid-East ( don’t know if this is the way to describe…)
Got some Extra Curricular activities.
GPA: 90 out of 100
SAT: I will be taking 1 more and I am waiting my scores on the October SAT, but for now 1300 (700 Math, 600 English). I believe I can do AT LEAST 50 points higher than this. I was not in a comfortable situation while taking these SAT’s.
ACT: I will be taking the ACT 2 weeks later.
School Rank: A little bit complicated but in the top %10 percent.
I believe that I have a good common app essay.
I already graduated but just to improve my chances I’m going to a school in Macon (13th year of high school) just to take some AP classes ( AP Calc BC, AP Chemistry, AP Physics). But I will probably drop-out as soon as I get into a college, because I will not be getting a diploma from this school. But the universities that Im applying to will know that I took some classes I this school. (they will send a transcript)
I do have some back up schools, but like I said we recently moved so I need to stay close to my family until we get everything in order Georgia Tech is the only school that I want to go to because of this.
I would be really happy if you all could chance me, with what I’ve got AND assuming I get my SAT score somewhere around 1350-1430.
Keep in mind that there are several colleges and universities (Kennesaw State, Mercer, UGA, and Georgia Southern) that are part of the Regent’s Engineering Pathway Program (REPP) http://admission.gatech.edu/transfer/repp
Since you need to stay close, in the event that you do not get admitted to Tech it may not be a bad idea to attend one of these instead so that you can transfer to Tech after meeting the program requirements.
Not at all. You should apply, but you are on the lower end of the range, so I would just plan to have some back-up options and the REPP program would allow you to stay close and still graduate from Tech.
Yeah, Mercer is kind of my backyard so I’m applying to Mercer as a “just in case”.
But I’m also applying to universities such as Purdue,BU,Northeastern,USC,Ohio State,Cornell, UT-Austin,UCLA,UC-Berkeley. What do you think my chances are for those as well?
Especially for UCLA,USC,UT-Austin and UC Berkeley.
Based on your test scores and GPA, your current chances for admission to UCLA, USC, UT-Austin, Cornell, and UC-Berkeley are about zero; and probably close to zero for BU and Northeastern. I don’t know about tOSU or Purdue, but they are pretty competitive for admission to their engineering programs. If you improve your SAT to 1400, you should improve your chances a bit, but not at UCLA, USC, UC-Berkeley, Cornell, or UT-Austin; your admission as an applicant for engineering is not going to happen for you at those schools even if you improve your SAT to 1430. As an OOS applicant to a competitive public university, you probably want to have your test scores above the 75th percentile; check out the Common Data Sets for the schools you are interested in, and see where you fall.
Why don’t you look at engineering at University of Cincinnati, Ohio University, NC State, or University of Tennessee-Knoxville? You may be more competitive for admission there.
I didn’t study high school in America but I talked to someone in the international applications in Gatech, she said that they consider any GPA ,from Turkey, above 85 as an “A” so I’m kind of optimistic about my GPA after the chat I had. However, for my SAT scores like I said I barely had/have the time to study to those so I think I can’t go over 1450 but isn’t the requirements a little bit more flexible for International students? To be honest the only school I would like to go to is Georgia Tech so do you have any suggestions for me to improve my chances in Georgia Tech?
(By the way I’m expecting a Math score higher than 750 for my 7 Oct. SAT.)
I sent my application and I will be sending (probably) 4 SAT scores and if good, one ACT score. But other than that is there anything that I can do right now that will help my chances of getting into these universities?
I kind of agree with the “zero” chance for UCLA, UC Berkley and Cornell, but for UT-Austin and USC I’ve seen a decent amount of application that got accepted with the SAT in the 1300-1500 range ( I do not know if there is a chance of those being fake though ) so I am thinking that I might have a higher chance than zero, I would be very happy to hear your opinions.
But I will probably drop-out as soon as I get into a college, because I will not be getting a diploma from this school.
Please note that most of your acceptance will be contingent on your finishing and passing the classes you are currently enrolled in. Don’t think once you are accepted somewhere you can stop going to class.
Also are all these schools affordable to you. You will pay full price at the UCs. Not even sure how the Ga schools will consider you since you did not graduate from a Ga HS. You may be an Out of State student. Please look into the affordability of any school you are applying to.
Thank you, I considered the affordability with my father and we decided I should apply to all the colleges I want and decide from which ones accepted me.
But I will probably drop-out as soon as I get into a college, because I will not be getting a diploma from this school.
I will talk to GAtech and ask about this, because since I already have a Turkish transcript and diploma, it does not matter if I finish this school or not, I still will not qualify for a high school diploma from this school. But if GAtech says you are accepted only if you finish the courses that you have listed, that fine by me
I understand that the only school you want to go to is Georgia Tech; but as one of the above posters mentioned, you really need to have a back-up plan if you don’t get into Georgia Tech inasmuch as there is a good chance that you won’t.
I also think that you are overly optimistic about your chances of getting into UT-Austin with your GPA and test scores; even more so with Southern Cal. Further, consider that engineering applicants tend to have higher GPAs and test scores than non-engineering applicants; so the competition for spaces in engineering programs can be tough.
Realistically, you need to cast a wider net among possible schools; give yourself more, and not fewer, options. There are some universities out there with overall middling reputations but which still have good engineering programs (UTK being one of them).
I would talk with the guidance counselor at your high school about application strategies going forward; even though you may not plan to graduate from that school, getting a professional viewpoint may be helpful.
Thanks, I will try to find some colleges ASAP which have good engineering programs and that I have a chance of getting in. I will look at the colleges that you have listed, and if you have any other suggestions please let me know, thanks again!
