Please tell me my chances of getting into UC Berkeley L&S, Thank you so much!!!!

Berkeley is a state-funded school and since its monies come from the taxes of the people of the state of California, they are obligated first to admit California residents.

You would be paying full fees if you got in, so estimate $50-60K with no financial aid. Can your parents pay that? Since you are OOS and the state needs money, they might admit you to have you pay full freight, but you need to know that kids in-state with SAT’s at 2300 to 2400 are also being rejected.

You are academically above average for L&S but your EC’s and leadership positions are lacking from what I can tell. This means you need really good essays to push you over the borderline. Cal doesn’t take letters of rec by the way, so those aren’t a factor. But overall I’d have to say match.

Alright thank you auntbea and scodesario! I know Cal is very expensive but think it is worth it because of its amazing comp sci program. So far I have been admitted to UMich Engineering OOS, is UCB L&S far tougher to be admitted to, and is it significantly better in comp sci? Thank you!

My recommendation would be to visit Berkeley before you announce it as your “dream” school.

Additionally, your SAT scores are average for Berkeley and your EC’s are narrow. So it will be tough to get admitted.

I don’t think it’s worth the money, but that’s my opinion, I’ve visited Berkeley with my kids and even though I know my DS applied, I know he doesn’t like the feel of the area and campus.

The certainty about your application is that they want you for your full fees. This is your plus. You need to ask your parents about what they can afford.

Actually, the stats listed indicate a decent (but not certain) chance of admission to Berkeley L&S (EECS in CoE is typically harder to get admitted to). Berkeley admission thresholds are high enough that in-state vs. out-of-state won’t matter (out-of-state has a higher baseline GPA minimum of 3.4 versus 3.0 for in-state, but that really only matters at the less selective UCs).

The price might be more of a concern. For out-of-state students, financial aid may be offered, but at in-state levels, meaning that the $23,000 out-of-state additional tuition will not be covered by financial aid. The net price calculator will show that.

Rutgers is a perfectly respectable school for CS at lower cost for NJ residents.
