really, nobody has anything to say? :(

Last week was move-in at UNC and classes began this week, so the students are quite busy. That might explain the slow response. I’m a parent and my child was accepted OOS and it’s tough. There are not a lot of spots. Many from her school didn’t get in or were waitlisted . There’s no magic number or bullet for OOS. I can share what my D did.

Your standardized tests look good. If you haven’t already visit so you’re able to explain what you’d bring to the campus. Your grades and scores and activities don’t all have to be perfect, but you should be really great at something. Show passion for one of your subjects or activities. Apply by the early deadline. Good luck!

Greetings:

You certainly seem driven albeit a bit anxious for free advice. I am sure you have seen the OOS statistics for UNC but if not, the following link is an overview of the incoming class.

[UNC News - Preliminary Profile: 2013 UNC First-Year Class](http://uncnews.unc.edu/content/view/6168/68/)

As you will see, there were almost 21K OOS applications this year for a class that by state mandate is comprised of no more than about 18% OOS students system wide. For the class of 2017, actual statistics: 20,944 OOS applications, 3,199 admitted (15.2%), 763 enrolled (3.6%).

As ‘Amazhon’ stated, your stats and ECs look solid and in line with other OOS students who actually enrolled. The key is to show the admissions team what you will bring to UNC. You have to “sell” your unique qualities in your application details, especially the essays.

The admitted OOS students often have other stellar educational opportunities as I am sure you will. I have a family friend from NJ who was accepted at UNC this year but for some reason chose Princeton instead…go figure! Good luck with your pursuits.

Yes i am a bit anxious but i’d like to say driven is a better term! UNC Chapel Hill is my dream school, i really want to visit but it’s 8 hours away from home i’m not sure if i’ll have the opportunity to visit unless i get in first. I am planning on applying EA the only question for me with UNC is whether or not i can afford it.

Does the fact that my intended major is business affect me in any way?

As of this writing and as a parent, I can speak on affordability. Carolina is one of the few state schools that commit to meeting the full need of ALL students, including OOS. Usually that type of support is restricted to the ivies. They are being hit with some serious budget cuts and OOS tuition will increase next year.

Sit down with your parents and complete the cost estimater. It can be found on UNC’s site or college navigator. It was very accurate. If the sticker price still makes you nervous apply for outside scholarships. That’s what we did.

FWIW, we are 7.5 hours away and decided to visit. It was my Ds number one too. I understand that’s not feasible for many families. Review the website and organizations and see where you might be able to bring something to the table. Whether you are a leader, or researcher, or humanitarian, or entrepreneur -show what you can do and back it up with what you accomplished in high school. Again I’m not an expert. Just paying it forward and passing on advice we received.

The business school I hear is competitive and heard they recommend a back up major. You don’t actually apply to your major until your sophomore year. What you put on your application is an intended program. I’m not sure what impact, if any, that has in decisions.
