I believe that OP’s application is very solid, but extracurriculars do play a major role in the second step of the admissions- which is why people with high scores, with good extracurriculars constantly get rejected.

There is a fine line between good, and great.

Model United Nations for 2 years- why is this significant? Did you win any prizes? Were you a secretary general? Did you obtain a leadership position?
Key club for 2 years- Too standard. But, did you change your community? I am not asking for hours. What did you do in Key Club that differentiates you from other Key Club members?
Volunteered Habitat for Humanity- ditto.
Found the Flag football club- Excellent. Did you guys win any prizes?
Taekwondo 3rd degree black belt- Good.
Swimming 2 years varsity- Typical. I am sorry! You have to be different!
Soccer 2 years varsity- Typical.
200+ hours of volunteer (HFH, Hospital)- Typical.
Played piano for 11 years and Clarinet for 7- Piano is wayyy common, but clarinet seems interesting. It will be better if you had solo concerts, like for free, to help out the community.
AP honor student in school- Ok, but there are many applicants like this.

I hope I haven’t insulted you in any way shape or form.
Your extracurriculars seem typical, but accomplishments in activities make the key difference!

Your argument is flawed from the start in that multiplying Golfer’s numbers by 2 gives a percentage of 180%, which is not possible in this situation. Evidently you also have ignored that Golfer is a rising senior, in which case he hasn’t even had the chance to apply, let alone get rejected.

Before calling other people idiots, please examine your own head beforehand.

@bausser, I’m not trying to start a fight or anything on this thread, and I honestly wish the best for the OP, but I feel as if my percentages are pretty accurate. Unless he/she cures cancer between now and application time, his/her shot at Brown or Duke won’t exceed 10% because there are SO many more qualified applicants. GPA is good, SAT is great no doubt. That’s why I said he/she will get to the final round at most schools, because the main portions of her application is spot-on; however, his/her ECs aren’t outstanding, and there is NO leadership, which will almost kill him/her when he/she is compared to another student of same academic standing but better extracurricular standing.

I don’t believe in false hope whatsoever, that is why my chances are so low, and yes, I am a junior/rising senior. I may not be an admissions officer, but based off my perusing of this forum for a few years, I think I can give a pretty decent representation of his/her chances.

Oh, and when you say multiply my chances by 2, that’s pretty ludicrous. NOBODY has a 60% shot at JHU or Northwestern let alone a 180% chance at UMich? Also, having a 20% chance at ANY Ivy League school is INCREDIBLE, and the OP isn’t that (not trying to bash you OP, but just stating the truth).

Anyways, aside from arguing with you, best of luck to you OP! You’ll definitely end up at a great school for sure :)

I have great gratitude towards all of you and don’t think arguing is necessary. Moreover, getting into the reality and facing it is very important in life and I certainly appreciate the “reality” of college acceptances. Regarding my extra curricular, I have been attending hospitals regularly to play the clarinet, main-submitted numerous times in MUN conferences, received scholar athlete award for 4 years and coaches award once, and I also forgot that I was a finalist for the AMC.
I really appreciate the replies and hope to see more! I never get offended in any form, so feel free to say critical points! Also, it would be helpful to suggest some schools that are similar to my stats! Thank you!

Well then why didn’t you mention those?! Haha now THAT makes your ECs look like they’re worth something. Of course, still not BAM! material, but a whole lot better than the mundane initial post. Scholar athlete is great (makes your athletics look meaningful), and AMC finalist is commendable.

hey… what happened to bausser?
he disappeared.

Your test scores and GPA are strong; however, your extracurricular activities are quite broad (lack of focus). Depending on how you compose your essays, your EC’s will either make or break your application. Best of luck!

Huh, yeah he did. Guess we won haha

bump bump THANK YOU

I have a 3.87 cumulative GPA with my freshman year average being 3.62. I do have a great improvement as time went, but is 3.87 a bit low for Ivy schools and the ones I am chancing for?
THANK YOU
