SO, HERE IS THE LIST OF COLLEGES THAT I WANT TO APPLY TO.....

SUPERRRRR REACH

Harvard
Princeton
Yale
Swarthmore

REACH

UPENN( ED??/LEGACY)
Cornell
Brown
Northwestern
Uchicago

MATCH (?)

Georgetown

UCLA
Tufts

SAFETY(?)

UMichigan
PENN STATE
UNIV OF PITTSBURGH

BUT, THE PROBLEM HERE IS THAT I AM AN INTERNATIONAL STUDENT/ FEMALE ASIAN WHO GOES TO HIGH SCHOOL IN THE U.S., WHO NEEDS FINANCIAL AID.....
SO....YES...THAT IS WHY I AM FREAKING OUT RIGHT NOW....

PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF I HAVE ANY CHANCE IN THOSE SCHOOLS AND IF I WILL AT LEAST GET INTO MY MATCH SCHOOL......

THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!!

It’d be nice to know what kind of major/occupation you’re looking at.

Other than that, your Match schools sound like good matches if you write excellent essays. Just don’t write them in allcaps ;]

The legacy in UPenn stands out to me, but don’t rely on it to much, I had a friend who double legacy’d in Duke and still didn’t make it.

Yeah HYP is just a lottery ticket, sign it away and forget about it l0l

Other than that I’m shying away from a lot of your reach schools myself cuz they’re pretty stingy about money. Only your “SUPER REACH” schools are generous with scholarships.

Your safety schools would be shooins for you, I’m sure.

Do mine?
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1531605-hey-why-not-chance-me-please.html</a></p>

No matter what anyone here might tell you, you are EXTREMELY qualified for all these schools; heck, if you apply to all those schools, you’ll definitely get into at least a few, and then you won’t even need a safety
I wouldn’t recommend that, though, since that’s a waste of time and money, so pick 6-8 of your favorites and one definite definite safety, to be, well, safe.

Good luck!!

I think I agree with how you’ve classified your choices for the most part. Georgetown, Berkeley, and UCLA are maybe more high matches/low reaches. You’re definitely in at Penn State and Pittsburgh, so that takes care of your safeties.

Your SAT I is a bit low as it stands, and your chances will definitely be raised for your reach schools if you can get it to 2300+.
Your ECs reflect strong involvement as well as passion, especially for music.
So, all in all, I wouldn’t worry too much if I were you :)

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1529971-chance-northwestern-washu-columbia-ed-others-thanks.html</a></p>

Thanks… btw, I am just worried about my freshmen grade… I went to Korean Public School and it is famous for its grade deflation…
anyway my GPA is going up, but still, should I be worried?
My unweighted GPA is still not very good and my counselor tells me that is one thing that will block me from reach schools…
I would appreciate any input here!

P.S.: Do Princeton and Stanford look at high school freshmen grade??

bumppppppp ;)

I will chance you back!!!

Tbh, I’m not sure why you are so nervous. Many of those colleges are like lottery tickets. Its either hit or miss for alot of people. You have strong ECs aswell. What I didn’t understand was the international student part. You studied in Korea your freshman year and then finished off high school here? If that’s the case, then you should be fine. I also don’t know why Swarthmore is in your super reach either. Also, from what I’ve heard about UPenn, they are very stingy on money. Good Luck!

Thanks for your input! I am just nervous because my counselor told me that as an international student, with mediocre GPA and with the need for financial aid, many of my reach/match schools will be much harder than I think…so…

And yes. I finished my freshmen year (equivalent to last year of Korean middle school) in Korea and did sophomore/junior year in the States.

BTW, yes. I know UPenn is stingy on money… Do you think having a legacy may help at least a little bit?? …

Thanks!!!

Stanford disregards Freshmen grades. P’ton does not.

CantConcentrate,

where did you find that info?? just curious…:)

Bumppppppp ;)

Sorry, but you are just being rude… I appreciate honest opinions but not a rude attitude from someone I do not know.
And by the way, no, I am not on crack

please disregard my last post… someone was being very rude…
anyway…

I would appreciate your input!!

bumpppp:)

anyone???

chance back…? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1532897-linguistics-chances-updated.html</a></p>

wow your ECs are really amazing. i think you’re competitive at all of those colleges. I’d bet that you’ll get into at least one of the top schools (top 25). Good luck with UPenn ED  some schools don’t look at freshman grades. you should check out what schools value ( i know college data nad the college board has this posted). for example, brown considers your rigor and essays more important than your GPA. look for schools that like extracurriculars (such as the top 15 LACs) :D

UPenn is not stingy at all. Did a npc and they gave the most financial aid out of all the schools I did it for. I wouldn’t say Any of your matches are really matches based on how lottery-esque those schools are. No offense but it looks like you just went on usnews and picked schools from the top 20 without looking at the character of them because they are all pretty different.

Nonetheless you have great stats other than your sat which is still good and you have a great chance anywhere.

I kind of agree with soontobegrad…you’re asking the wrong question here. Obviously you have great scores and EC’s and no doubt you’ll probably get into a couple of your reaches/“super-reaches”. But you’ve chosen 16 schools to apply to…? How do you plan to finish the supplements for all 16 by the time you have to apply? And it’s not about just finishing them. You’re going to have to spend a lot of time on each one so that you give sincere answers…

Also, the 16 you are considering have COMPLETELY different characteristics regarding almost everything. For example, you’re applying to stanford where the weather’s nice, and Cornell/Harvard where it’s comparatively colder. You’re applying to Brown which has no core curriculum, but UChicago which has a weird quarter system (weird, not bad). It doesn’t seem like you’ve researched these schools well enough because not only are they completely different geographically from each other, but they probably have different research-intensive programs, different work loads and different educational experiences overall.

I’m not trying to say your list is very superficially chosen for overall rankings, but frankly, it does seem like it. Perhaps you should start narrowing it down because i’m almost certain that if you don’t get in UPenn ED, you won’t have enough time to apply to every college on that list. Also i’m just curious, but what’s your intended major?

Thank you for your input!

Trustt,I hope to double major in International Relations and Biochem or just IR at first.

For the matter of schools list, I am one of those weird people who do not have any particular preferences-I am aware of characteristics of each school and I do not mind hot or cold weather, core curriculum or open curriculum, or anything whatsoever. I know it sounds weird,…

Yes, so I am having a hard time finding a college with the right fit. You know, every time I visit colleges, I don’t get the “feeling”. I just like all of them…yes, weird…haha

Anyway, I am going to spend more time on narrowing down the schools but I want to keep it in 12-14 schools, since I believe I can manage the workload and I should be able to.

Do you have any suggestions or advice? I would really appreciate it !!

Soontobegrad,

I am an international student even though I go to public high school here and have a legacy at Penn. Upenn is very stingy to international students only…;((( it is my dream school but it is need-aware for internationals…

I am having a dilemma over whether to apply ED to upenn or not. I know that Penn gives a little boost to ed applicants but my counselor tells me that I have to be realistic and suggest that I apply EA for a second-tier schools…

Btw, my GPA is not strong, rather kind of weak. Weighted is 4.8 out of 5.3 and unweighted is 3.6 out of 4. Yes I know it is very weak… This is why I am so worried about …,everything…

I would appreciate any comment or advice!

Oops, meant to say Brown lacks a fixed-core curriculum.

Anyways, back to the topic:

ED to UPenn might increase your chances by a lot… but you should know that although the ED acceptance rate is higher, you’ll also be competing with (in general) a brighter group of applicants, many of which may be legacies or recruited athletes. And applying EA to other schools is a good idea if you can finish your applications on time before the deadline.

Concerning your intended major(s)…here’s the thing. All (or at least most) of the schools you’re applying to are great at Politics-related majors. However, look at this way. If you’re serious about possibly intending to major in Biochem too at some point, it sort of narrows your list down a little. For example, I’ve never heard of Georgetown being particularly well known for the natural sciences (someone correct me if i’m wrong).

Also if you’re having trouble finding the right fit, why don’t you look at some of the subtleties of each college? That seriously helps… like if you’re really picky about good food, then maybe Brown isn’t the best option for you (from what I hear). If you want a nice music scene, look up what colleges have lots of bands visiting nearby, etc.

What i’m trying to say, is that these things seem petty now and you might not think the details matter now, but the little things are what really distinguishes between the college that fits you perfectly, and the rest that you’re applying to just in case you don’t get in. All of these are undoubtedly great colleges academic-wise, so don’t try to compare them there. Just try to find the attractive nuances and you’ll finally “get the feeling” haha.
