Im an African American male with a 3.55 gpa, president solar cup at my school and frequetly volunteer at international missionary organization. I got an 1820 on my SAT and im taking my ACT in october I also received a 600 on my u.s History and 580 on my literature SAT 2s, respectively i have had a few ap classes and scored mostly 3s.
theses are the schools im looking to apply:

University of California San diego
Washington University in St. Louis
University of Ohio- Athens.
University of Illinois Urbana Champaign
University of Illinois Bloomington
University of California Davis
University of Washington
University of California Merced
University of California Santa Cruz
Penn state
University of Alabama
Pitt
UVA

All your U of C’s, and Penn State are reaches. Your SAT is pretty low, you dont have many extra curricular’s, and your GPA is pretty mediocre.

No chance at Wash U St Louis or UVA. mostly maybe for everywhere else

Penn State is a match, not a reach. Middle 50 for their combined SAT is 1630-1940 and his GPA falls in their middle third. Pitt is a match on SAT (1770-2090) but the GPA is a little low for there; being out-of-state will help there, but a decent shot. UC Santa Cruz is an easy match. UVA and WashU are reaches. UCSD and Davis may be reaches. UC Merced is a likely a borderline safety. Ohio U is a safety. Bama is a safety. Illinois & UWash are borderline low reach/matches.
What is Illinois-Bloomington?

Google the schools’ common data sets to get a better idea.

I forgot to take University of Illinois Bloomington off because i honestly don’t know anything about it.

Any other opinions?

You mean Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana…e.g. the Hoosiers? The University of Illinois doesn’t have a branch there, as far as I know.

You have quite a diversity of schools ranging from rural (Davis, PSU) to urban (Washington, Pitt). What major(s) and settings are you interested in?

major wise i was thinking political science/ government affairs management with a minor in public relations. i know its a strong possibility that i will change my major, but i know it will be more political based than anything else. As for the urban/rual factor, I have lived in both throughout my life and presonally it really matter doesn’t because i can never seem to pick one over the other

You might want to explore some Washington DC based institutions as well then: American, George Washington, Georgetown, Howard.

I was going to but they seem like pretty high reaches for me.

Because of your interest getting involved with politics, it may make more sense to lean toward urban areas with easier opportunities to get involved in more high profile political machinery or campaigns while taking classes.

For instance, here’s [a list of possible Political Science internships](http://www.pitt.edu/~politics/internships.html) at Pitt. Pitt also has a highly respected graduate school of [Public Affairs](http://www.gspia.pitt.edu/) with several top programs and centers that an undergrad may be able to get involved with somehow, i.e. undergrad research.
