I’m applying from Hong Kong too. I think that you need more leadership and that you need to bump up that CR score greatly for a lot of the schools on your list. Which school do you attend?

Also, if are considered an international applicant at any of those schools, your chances will be diminished greatly, as you are applying for financial aid.

I am strictly speaking - American. If I remember correctly, all those schools are need-blind for US citizens, regardless of location. Nonetheless, I will be in the international applicant pool.

In which case, your financial aid status should not make a difference. Cornell would be a low/mid reach, depending on if you take the SAT again and whether you can bring your CR score up to 700 or above. Duke, Dartmouth, MIT, UChicago and Princeton will be high reaches. The others will be mids to low mids.

Do you have any suggestions on safety schools? I really need some. Right now, I’ve got Carnegie Mellon and UMichigan, but I’m not sure if those are good enough (bad enough). When you say mids to low mids… do you mean reach or match?

I think you have a good chance at Emory, CMU, U Michigan, Notre Dame, and Northwestern, but you still are in the running for the others. I would try to retake the SAT again to improve your Critical Reading Score, but your other scores are fantastic, congratulations! See if you can somehow emphasize on your application that you self studied AP classes, that is very impressive.

Thank you. To be honest, the chances of me taking the SAT again are extremely slim. I already completed my commonapp for UChicago EA and I mentioned my self studying AP exams in the additional comments area, highlighting the fact that APs were not offered at my school and that the content was above my school level. (My intended majors are Math, Physics and Economics). Any suggestions for safeties? That’s what I’m lacking the most right now.

Your safeties depend on where you are applying. I am using Babson College and University of Michigan as safeties, because they are relatively easy to get into while maintaining a great rank at reputation in the business world.

I would caution you to look at the schools you are applying to and determine the schools that only consider the Math and Critical Reading section (I know of Chicago, Cornell, Notre Dame and University of Michigan). Though a 2190 is a competitive score as a domestic applicant, a 1440 might be below the 50th percentile at some of the schools.

The lucky thing for you is that, at Chicago, a lot of weight is given to essays - so much that it could possibly make up for possibly blemishes in other aspects of your application (not that I’m saying that there are any).

Some advice that I would like to give you is the following: most of the schools you are applying to superscore, so if you can, take the SAT in December, or even January, and just focus on Critical Reading (you can even take the ACT if you want).

I would recommend you find a school using CommonApps information (it is surprising detailed in terms of SAT and ACT) with a SAT range between 1800 and 2000. Your transcript seems more than sufficient for even the most competitive of schools.

Princeton-reach
UChicago EA-high match
MIT EA-reach
Dartmouth-reach/high match
Duke-high match
Northwestern-match
Johns Hopkins-match/high match
Cornell-high match reach

Impressive resume overall, good job! Like others have said, I would seriously try to retake the SAT because the 640 will hurt you. You can make up for that with essays, but always better to be safe than sorry! Best wishes :)

Princeton-reach
UChicago EA-high match
MIT EA-low reach
Dartmouth-low reach/high match
Duke-high match/low reach
Northwestern-match
Johns Hopkins-match/high match
Cornell-high match/ low reach

Duke seems like a great fit. I live near the school and i know ppl that have gotten in. Ur ECs are good and so are your test scores. If you are able to visit these colleges, you should schedule interviews to help your application. John Hopkins and Princetons are the kind of schools where its a toss up if you get in since so many many qualified applicants like yourself are applying. Rememeber to highlight your passion (about 1 to 2). Make yourself standout from the crowd.

depending on what you want to major on, these are some good safties

Engineering/business/accounting - NC State University

Liberal Arts/Medicine - UNC Chapel Hill (Not rlly a safety since it is hard to get in out of state)
