Chance me please? Thanks ( :

Hello, I'm a prospective international student looking to apply to UChicago, Amherst and Stanford (possibly Harvard if I have the guts...) I'll be applying with the international GCSE and a full IB Diploma. I'm applying RD to all the schools by the way.

Stanford is obviously the top out of the bunch (excluding H)...but all are amazing. I tried to pick the schools around what I want to do in the future, so please inform me if I'm wrong. I'll be applying to Stanford as an environmental engineering major (very very competitive pool...I know...) and both UChicago and Amherst as an environmental science/economics major. I'm very interested in environment sustenance and alternative energy resources, and am especially interested in pursuing either environmental economics or environmental law as a postgrad.

Before anybody mentions safeties and matches and so on, I'll be applying to schools in the UK and select Asian unis so I think I've got the bases covered. If anybody has suggestions please let me know though, will be much appreciated.

17 year old Asian girl by the way, if you couldn't tell, currently attending private international school in southeast Asia.

Stats are as follows:
SAT1 - 2210 highest single sitting (720 cr, 690 m, 800 w) 2300 superscored (720 cr, 780 m, 800 w)
SAT2s (which I winged, badly it has to be said) - 680 Math 2, 660 Physics. Will be revising like crazy and resit the same subjects in November. I realize at this moment that this is my weakest point.

Level 6 (out of 6) HSK (Chinese proficiency test) obtained June of 2012.

iGCSEs - 4 a*s, rest as and a couple bs I believe. I do have a C though in First Language Chinese which hurts /:

IB - HLs are Math, Physics and English with a 6/766. SLs are Chem, Chinese B and Econ with a 577 I believe... I'll try to make my HLs a secure 766 if not 776 by the time December rolls around. Chem on the other hand is a different story but again I'll try my hardest to make it a 6. As of October '12, the total predicted grade is somewhere around 38 (min) to 40.

Toefl score won't be needed anyway, but winged and got a 113, if it's worth a mention.

Recs will be very solid I believe, one will be from my current physics teacher and the other from my GCSE English teacher and current EE advisor, both of whom I am very close to.

Writing has always been a strong suit of mine so I'll try and make the essays as solid as possible.

I do have a fair list of extracurriculars, ranging from school yearbook sub editor to MUN newsletter editor in chief, vice president of environment group which raised around $1000, form representative, various swimming achievements, other sports commitments and so on. I can provide a more detailed list if desired.

I'm mainly concerned about the IB grades and the SAT 2 grades in particular, especially the 5 in SL Chem...will this hurt my chances greatly? How do I stack up as an engineering/BSc candidate?

Please feel free to comment, anything is appreciated, thank you so much for your input!

UofC, Stanford, Amherst, Harvard…

ALL reaches. Your SATs are the only thing that fit the profile. Your IGCSEs are sub-par for these schools. Your IB grade might be reasonable if you get a prediction of 40, but remember: US schools, unlike UK schools, care more about your transcript than your actual diploma grades/predictions.

TOEFL irrelevant. Your ECs are described too vaguely for me to give you an idea, but they look run-of-the-mill for your schools.

Add the fact that you’re international, then those are definitely high reaches. I would tell you to apply to some easier US schools, like UMich or NYU or something, but if you think your UK choices are better then alright.

Since you double-posted for HK unis, here’s my two cents:

CUHK and HKUST: in, definitely. Kids at my school get offers of 35-36
HKU: a bit harder, but most likely in.

You might want to reconsider Hong Kong as a destination though. For your choice of curriculum, a HK degree would be far inferior to the same degree from a comparable US school. They’re fine for safeties, though.

Are you at UWCSEA by any chance? :)

Also - please give me a chance back!

No I’m not, didn’t get through the interview round haha.

Hmm, interesting input, thanks for that. 40+ with my subject combination isn’t the easiest thing in the world…but obviously I’ll try! Anyone else have anything to say?
