Chance me please, Transfer 2011

Jewish/Hispanic male Sophomore from the University of Central Florida, first generation college student with 36 credits and a 3.67 gpa (rising trend). I am taking 12 credits in the fall and 15 in the spring. I am going to be applying to Columbian college of arts and sciences. My high school statistics weren't great I started my Junior year with a 2.76 and graduated with a 3.4, shows my ability to bounce back from adversity, but by the end of my spring semester I will of completed 66 credits, which I would imagine would make my high school record irrelevant. I don't have classes like calc or chem because my major doesn't require it and would be irrelevant to my course study. In my essay I talked about how I wanted to transfer so that I could be afforded more research opportunities, take advantage of the great internship opportunities in NY which my current university lacks, as well as Fordham's study abroad program.

Great Recommendation letters and essays (probably the strongest part of my application besides my ecs)

Fall courses:
Composition 2
Criminal Law
Criminal Procedure
American History 2

Spring:
Political phycology
Scope and Methods of political Science
Comparative Politics
International Politics

Extracurriculars (high school):

Varsity Swim team captain
2 year varsity lettermen
Most outstanding new swimmer award
Founder of Tiger Care International (helped raise money for children in Uganda)
Best Buddies peer mentor
Red Cross Volunteer
Community pool Lifeguard
Part of school debate team

Extracurriculars (college):

Committee chair of Philanthropy within my fraternity
Coordinator for two autism awareness fundraisers raising over $10,000 last year (will be doing the same this year)
Member of Phi Alpha Delta (pre-law fraternity)
Volunteer (Habitat for Humanity)
Member of College Democrats
Summer internship as a Legal Assistant at a law firm

If anyone has any suggestions in what I would need to do in order to better my chances of admittance please let me know!

Your biggest problem is that Fordham may not consider you a full time student. The Fordham course load is a minimum of 15 credits per semester- 5 classes per term for freshman and sophomore year. Taking only 4 all freshman year and half of sophomore year may cause discrepancies in what your graduation date would be.

I applied as a transfer to Fordham does any one know when they are going let us know?

I believe Fordham considers a student full time if he or she takes 4 or more classes (at least in terms of billing and allowing a student to live on campus). Many students who come in with AP credits take 4 classes, especially as they become upperclassmen. Not sure how it would impact a transfer application (I really don’t know about the transfer process to Fordham) other to say that a few summer classes will be needed to graduate on time. Good luck.

Happy1, you may not be aware (because I wasn’t until recently) but there are a certain number of courses students are required to take by the end of sophomore year. If you have AP credits it can allow students to take less than 5 courses, but otherwise underclassmen are required to take 5 per semester. I took 4 this semester and our soph. dean was telling me about it. Except I came in with a number of AP’s which is why I was allowed to do it.

Yes…I believe that is what I wrote (“Many students who come in with AP credits take 4 classes…”) and I apologize if I was unclear in any way. The expected class load at Fordham is 5 classes. Students need 120 credits to graduate which works out to 5 courses /semester (again, unless they come in with AP/IB or other college credit).

And I guess worst case the student can come in with a lower class standing (ex. as a soph. instead of a junior) if he/she doesn’t have the required number of credits. Again, I’m not sure how the transfer process works.
And, note to OP, the Columbian college of arts and sciences is not at Fordham (is it GW?) so just be careful on your application.
