chance me please!! transfer cc to ucla

here is my scenario.

i am currently in my second year at a community college.
major is computer science/engineering.

i want to transfer to ucla hopefully 2009 or 2010.

my first year at my cc i totally screwed up and had to drop my pre- calc class the first term, and then retake it and fail it the second term. i also dropped my programming class (twice and am taking it now). this past summer, i retook pre calc-got an A, and got an A in business as well.

i have 2 C's, 4 B's, and 2 A's so far.

my current gpa is 2.92.

i still have quite a ways to go, and my current workload is:

chem1 w/lab (6 units)
speech1 (3 units)
calculus (5 units)
intro to C++ program (4 units)

so far i am doing really well in these classes and expect no lower than a B.
(hopefully they will be all As)

i checked out the pre reqs for the major and there is quite alot left, but i wanna know what my chances are now-i am trying real hard to do my best, knowing that i screwed up my first year (and regret it big time)

please let me know what my chances are of getting to ucla (my counselor says i should get a gpa near 3.6 at the rate im going and i KNOW i can get better)

i am also considering ucsb for backup and a couple other schools.

tell me what u think-all criticism accepted!!

btw-i also have one D, will that hurt my chances of getting into UCLA? (it was my math class before i retook it and got an A)

thanks!

The D shouldn't matter much if you brought it up to an A through academic renewal. Those C's will hurt you though.

Look here -> UCLA Undergrad Admissions: Profile of Admitted Transfer Students by Major, Fall 2008

Scroll down to the Computer Science and Engineering section. The average admit GPA for that program this year was 3.71. With that said, you would be more competitive shooting for something close to that range. The burning question though is: what classes did you get those C's in?

So how many units is that 2.92 with? If it's only one semester, you have a good shot at bringing up your GPA to be competitive come application time. Good luck.

i got a C in english and world history.

i have taken 3 semesters so far including my summer term.

and so far it is a 2.92 but i know that it shud be in the 3.2-3 after this current term (fingers crossed)

what do u think my chances are at ucsb? any better? although my main focus is on ucla.

Three semester but how many units? Still, I honestly don't think you have a good shot at UCLA. UCSB might be in your range if you can get the GPA in the 3.2-3.3 range.

38 units so far.
is there any specific reason i dont have a shot at LA?
is it because of my grades?

In short, yes. The avg GPA of admitted Computer Science transfers this year was 3.7 so you still have a while to go. But with only 38 units, you have time to raise your GPA pretty considerably.

pretty dim. Apply next year. I know someone with your stats that only got into UCSD and got rejected from everywhere else including UCLA. But yeah, you're way below the average. Say, Whats the highest GPA you can get after fall?

OP has a 2.92 GPA with 38 units which means that s/he has 111 grade points. (111/38 = 2.92).

Since s/he is taking 18 units this term, the highest GPA that s/he can have by the end of this Fall is 3.27 (18*4.0 = 72 + 111 = 183 --- 183/
(38+18) = 3.267).

^^true. but i still have a lot of units left to go as im going by the pre-reqs found on this link:

ASSIST Report: MOORPARK 08-09 UCLA Articulation Agreement by Major

i know ill probably be at the community college for the next year and half-dont u think that that maybe enough time and effort for me to have raised that 2.92 to a 3.7 or higher?? (given that i get all As from here out)

ive been told its not impossible, so...what do u think? i mean, its not like im trying to transfer right away. i have to finish my igetc and then finish the pre-reqs from above before i even think about transferring. and i am also trying to be involved in school clubs and volunteer work/ other extra-curricular activites.

and if its still not enough,do u have any recomendations?

Yes, if you take an extra year, you'll most likely get in if you get A's from here on out. I've seen it happen. Also, do good ECs and try starting a club or something.

2.92 won't get you into LA, the best you can get into with that GPA is CSU. You have to raise your GPA's and get straight A's consistently if you want to get into LA.

PS:
I am planning to transfer for compsci major too haha so i hope you screw up. LOL jk =P

be aware you may have an even lower transferrable GPA than you even think -- many cc's will calculate your second repeat of a class, regardless of whether you repeat the class even again ( as per your pre-calc class)

^^okay-im DEF NOT planning to transfer anytime soon with that 2.92 (God NO!) but my understanding is: if i can raise my gpa to a 3.7 or higher by the time i finish all my requirments, and i am consistent with my As, do goood ECs, and some clubs or something-then there shouldnt be a reason for me to not be accepted? and hey-cofeebreak himself has said he's seen it happen, although i know it will take a lot of hard work and determination. but how much will that recalculation of my pre-calc class cost me??

oh yeah^^^salvationArmani-whats ur gpa so far? (prob higher than mine hehe)

^^regarding my gpa....will ucla look at my overall gpa (including the classes for like my igetc requirments as well?) or will they only look to the gpa of my major pre reqs? and how much significance do they (or any other uc school for that matter) give to your first year at a cc??

thanks

ps-i was looking at the avg gpa admitted for my major, and given that the avg was 3.71, that means that they must have accepted a couple applicants under the 3.7 range....right?? so if my gpa was like a 3.5 or 3.6, then its still worth a shot maybe??

does it also help that i am also going to major in civil engineering as well?? double major.

colleges usually pay more attention to the core subjects than the GE's, so if you excel in your core subjects like compsci, math etc., and end up with a 3.5ish GPA, they will definetely still take a serious look at your app.

double majors makes it harder, because now 2 departments are involved, the compsci and the engineering department.

^^so if i get out of cc with one major and a 3.5-3.6 gpa and good EC's, then i will have a legit chance with la? and maybe a killer essay and letters of recog may help right?

thanks for ur help!

yeah, make sure you do well in your core classes, get some good recommendations, good ec's and you have a legit shot. good luck =)
