Chance me please! transferring to Berkeley from a CCC!

I submitted my TAG for davis but Berkeley is my #1 choice. Only thing I'm worried about is that my gpa kinda go dented from working a lot. Im currently getting all A's and hope to raise my gpa to a 3.6 by the end of fall. Anyways, Here are my stats:

Applying as an MCB (cell and developmental bio) major

-gpa: 3.53. I have 4 W's that were all in GE classes. None in pre reqs. Have completed 72 units so far.
-IGETC: All completed
-pre reqs: Currently taking bio 1a and chem 112a. Will be done with ALL pre reqs by end of spring 2014

Extra curriculars:
- Currently in the TAP program.
- worked 30-35 hrs per week at walgreens since spring 2012.
- chemistry tutor
- I tutor two 9th graders in math and english.
- biology club
- Minoity (half mexican half iranian, applying as latino)
- phi theta kappa
- Volunteered 150+ hours at my local hospital
- Participated in an internship at stanford university during high school. this is what furthered my interest in cell biology.
- Im responsible for paying 1/4 of my household's monthly rent and for buying all of the groceries/household necessities.
- Taught myself how to fluently speak farsi

My personal statement should be decent.

So with all that being said, do I stand a chance of getting into Cal? I understand that around 80-90% of TAP applicants get admitted into UCB, but I'm still a bit worried because of my gpa.

I think you’re in. That major is in a group that has a 41% transfer admit rate, which makes it one of the less selective majors. You have great ECs too by the way.

Do you think my ec’s and tap are good enough to cover up a 3.5ish gpa though?

Lol, I don’t think that being “latino” is an extracurricular activity. Neither is paying rent or buying groceries.

“Do you think my ec’s and tap are good enough to cover up a 3.5ish gpa though?”
I have no idea. IMO, however, a 3.5 seems somewhat low. Hope for the best and good luck to you.

Ditto. Race as an EC would put a lot of people (including me) at an extreme disadvantage. But I could see it on my app. “I have been White for about 20 years and participated in White people activities.”

But back on topic.

Lozan89, you seem to be doing well. MCB’s requirements are very similar to the Engineering college’s, so your GPA is not in ‘immediate rejection with prejudice’ territory. On top of your ECs, you have got a pretty competitive application.

I would leave out the minority bit and paying of groceries. But you could touch on that in the personal statements (particularly #2), and how it has shaped you as an individual.

Yea I wasn’t actually going to include race in my ec’s lol. Idk I just included it in that section of my post. Didn’t mean to tho

I’m going to include my employment in both my essays and ec’s. I’m not going to include paying for rent in my ec’s. however I will talk about it in my essay
