50+ community service hours tutoring elementary school students in mathematics and English and working as a farmhand at historical homestead

My ECs and community service hours aren't so hot because I've been moving around a lot, which has made me somewhat more reserved than others. Do colleges take this into consideration? I spent 10th-12th grade at the same high school by the way, but it was somewhat hard to adjust since it was such a tight-knit community.

Thank you for your time!

*Note to mods: please lock my prior post.

University of Michigan - Ann Arbor - match
Michigan State University - safety
UC Berkeley Engineering - low reach
UCLA Engineering - high match
Columbia - reach
Cornell - reach
Cal Tech - low reach
Carnegie Mellon - high match
MIT - reach
Duke - reach
Harvard - reach
Princeton - reach
Yale - reach

HYP are always reaches. Your scores are within range of the average admit, so it will be the essays and recs that determine the outcome of admission.

You have a fairly strong safety, so focus on the reaches.

UMich — High Match
Michigan State University — Match
UCLA — Low Reach

The rest of them are reaches with CalTech, Duke, HYP and MIT not really being possibilities. Your ECs and coursework are not focused enough for me to see you getting into some of the more selective schools without some sort of hook.

That you moved around can help if you have obvious holes in your application, but they cannot make up for not showing clear passion in a particular area.

I daresay my courses are fairly focused, considering I want to go into engineering/comp sci…

^Yes, they are fairly focused. In all honesty, there’s not easy way to evaluate the quality of someone’s ECs. Lots of diverse activities, a few focused activities… It all depends on the school and the person.

UMich: high match
Michigan State: safety
Berkeley: low reach
UCLA: high match
Columbia: high reach
Cornell: low reach
Cal Tech: high reach
Carnegie Mellon: high match
MIT: high reach
Duke: low reach
Harvard: high reach
Princeton: high reach
Yale: high reach

Good luck! :)

Thanks for the input! Oh, and will being in-state for University of Michigan somewhat increase my chances for it’s CoE?

bump 10char (btw, I’ll chance back)
