Chance me Please! ~UCLA, USD, UCSD

First off, I'm a senior applying to: UCLA (my goal), USD, UCSD Pepperdine, USC, UC Irvine, UC Davis, and Stanford (I'm applying to Stanford just because it doesn't hurt to try.

Objective:
-SAT I: 630 CR, 750 M, 620 W (not sending)
-ACT: Eng 34, Math 36, Reading 35, Sci 30, Composite 34 (Writing+English 31)
-SAT II: Chem 710, US History 650
-AP Scores: Chem (5), Bio (3), US History (4)
-Unweighted GPA: 3.875
-Weighted GPA: 4.125
-Rank: N/A School doesn't rank (I'm glad for this since people at my school are quite -competitive, I often feel inadequate)
-Senior Year Course Load: 1. Reg Eng 12; 2. Reg US Gov/Econ; 3. AP Stats; 4. AP Psych; 5. Reg Physics; 6. Robotics (I know 2 AP classes isn't rigorous but I honestly believe it's the best I can do without being straight out miserable, I already go to sleep at like 1 every night)
-Awards: only for tennis (MVP for Varsity and JV same year)

Subjective:
-Extracurriculars: High School Tennis Team (captain my senior year, All-League 2 years, Varsity 4 years), Summer Jr. Tennis Team (this year we won the Northern California sectionals over the summer and will be playing in the national tournament in October), Robotics and Programming (I never liked the robotics club at our school so these were more personal projects), Origami (I teach to children at summer camps sometimes), archery (I got shooting with my friend every week), French Club (3 years) My ECs are weak admittedly
-Work Experience: None :(
-Volunteer: not much; taught origami to children, helped in group project to make large module swans with optimistic messages on each individual paper to send to victims of earthquake/tsunami in Haiti and Japan and raised money for the victims, participated in Vow of Silence (3 years) to stand up against child labor and stand up for children's rights such as education and clean water and raised money for the Free the Children organization.
-Personal Statements: I truly and honestly am not a great writer. I've never been good at conveying emotions and significant stories through words on a piece of paper. So judge my application as my personal statements being mediocre or worst, because honestly I am trying to make them nice, just it probably won't be all that great still. I also don't have many unique experiences to write about really.

Other:
State of residency: California
Intended Major: undecided (maybe chemistry, likely something science related, maybe even technology)
Ethnicity: half Filipino, half white
Gender: Female
School Type: Public

Conclusion: I know my application has some highs and lows but I'm not really sure how to judge it all around. If you need anymore information let me know, thanks!
(I had to retype this so i may have forgotten something the 2nd time around that I might have to add later)

UCLA: reach
UCD: reach-match
UCSD: low reach-match

UCLA low reach/high match
UCSD high match/match
UCD match

Your grade and GPA are average. Your choice of major, race and gender are not our concern, since we don’t see it anyway. Without seeing your class sechedule for your 10th and 11th grade is hard to see how challenge the classes are. UCLA and UCSD are different on calculating your weigthed GPA. UCLA will calculate ALL of your honor and AP classes, while some UC only calculate up to 8 semensters of honor and AP. You need to get clarification for that, too. Have you start your personal statement yet? Good Luck.

Thanks everyone for the responses so far!

10th grade classes (not including PE):

  • ASL 1
    -AP Biology
    -Honors English 10
    -Culinary Arts
    -Honors World History
    -Reg. Algebra 2/Trigonometry

11th grade classes:
-ASL 2
-AP US History
-Pre-Calculus
-AP Chemistry
-Digital Imaging
-Reg. English 12

Honors at our school aren’t weighted, only the APs.

UCLA: high match
Stanford: reach
UCSD: match
the others are all safeties and low matches

I love you all for taking time to respond! (Yes I’m just bumping). By the way, it probably doesn’t matter at all but I have like 60+ hours of volunteering outside of my current volunteering but they’re really spread out for various things. I saw other people mentioning hours so I figured I might as well while I’m bumping. I realized I really should’ve made my original post neater… too late now, heh, sorry

You’re a match/high match for UCLA, UCSD, and USC. Stanford is an obvious reach for all of us but you seem to recognize that. The rest are low matches to safeties. I would say UCLA, as your main goal, is within target but not a lock. Your ECs and volunteering are adequate, not weak. It’s really going to be left up to those essays, work with your english teacher on them. No matter how boring you think your life is, there is always SOMETHING to write about no matter how small. Good luck :)

I’ve gotten a lot of help on my personal statements and I believe they are actually decent now. It still tells my story, but in a much better written manner. Thanks for the feedback and suggestions by the way!

Hello! Thank you for all of your responses. I don’t know if you care, but in case you do here are the decisions I received from colleges:

UC Merced: Accepted
UC Davis: Accepted
UC Irvine Accepted (CHP)
UCSD: Wait Listed
UCLA: Rejected

University of San Diego: Accepted (Honors + $30,000 yearly scholarship)
University of Southern California: Rejected
Stanford: Rejected
UPenn: Rejected
University of Tampa: Accepted ($14,000 yearly scholarship)
Northeastern University: Accepted ($15,000 yearly scholarship)

I plan on attending the University of San Diego to take advantage of the honors program and scholarship for there. While I was disappointed with getting rejected at UCSD and UCLA since they were my top 2 realistic schools, I’m grateful I still got into a number of good colleges and am happy with the different choices I have had. Thank you for everything guys!
