I'm an African American Female. I'm of Jamaican decent (both my parents were born there). I'm a Maryland resident and my high school is really close to UMD and has one of the best programs in my county. A lot of kids from my school go to UMD.

I have a superstore of 2010 on my SAT but only a 1310 superstore for reading and math (and I know Maryland only looks at those two).

I have a 3.9 cumulative GPA on my schools scale and I don't really know how to convert to Maryland's scale but I know it will be higher if they weigh honors classes. Because I am in the special program at my school and basically all of my classes have been honors.

I've taken 7 AP classes including the three I am taking this year. I only have 4 classes this year (AP Calc BC, AP Lit, and AP Bio and Playwriting&Directing) because I do a half day internship at the United States Department of Agriculture where I'm working on a research project.

My essays were okay (not great but not bad). My sister graduated from the school (but they didn't ask about legacy on the application so I don't think they care). My recommendation from my counselor I think was really good. The teacher one I'm not too sure but I think it was okay.

I have have been working part time since the beginning of my junior year. I've been a Girl Scout for 8 years and I'm working on my Gold Award (which I put on my application). I don't have many school related extracurriculars though besides a few random clubs.

I'm really really hoping for the honors college or at least scholars! If someone could tell me my chances for both I would really appreciate it. This is basically my first and only choice so I'm getting more and more nervous as the time approaches!

@FutureDoctor31 Thank you so much for taking the time to reply!
I wanna be a business major do you think I could get into Smith? And do you know anything about honors and my chances with that?

You have an excellent chance for admittance to the University . Smith is very competitive to be directly admitted to, however. Considering you are above the minimum SAT for direct admittance to smith (1300), you do have a chance.

you have like the same gpa and sat score as me! I hope i can get into honors, but i have no idea where I/we stand. Good luck, finger crossed! :)

I think youâll very likely get into UMD! You might have a shot at Honors, SAT is a little low but I had slightly lower than that and I got into Honors so you definitely have a shot. Your internship and working on your Gold Award should help. How many AP classes does your school offer? I only took 4 myself but my school only offered 5. 7 is a good amount I think though.

Pinto I hope we can both get in! Itâs kinda up in the air for honors but anything is possible.

@Bornin92 thanks! My school offers quite a few APs mainly because we have a lot of languages. Iâm not exactly sure though. Ah Iâm so nervous. Thanks for your opinion!!

I donât think getting into the University should be a concern. Great chance, and definitely either scholars or honors, and really, theyâre both good programs. As for Smith School of Business, youâre in the pool. I canât say much on it but if you donât get in initially, you can always apply as a freshman. Just work harder, thatâs what youâre supposed to do in college anyway right?

Your 1310 is just a little low for the Honors College. The middle 50% ranged from 1350-1470 in the last three years. The college reports the average is over 1400. They are very numbers driven, but the Honors College sounds like it uses a somewhat holistic review.

Your research experience will count for a lot, especially if youâve applied with an intended major in science, related to your research. That could make the difference.

Numbers above are from âA Review of Fifty Public University Honors Programsâ by John Willingham.

I think you might be in good shape for the Scholars progam. Best of luck!

Thanks everyone. I got into scholars. Canât say Iâm not very disappointed but at least I got in and into another great program. Thanks for all your help and congrats if you got in!
