Hi everyone, so i would like to know my chances for Stanford, UC Berkeley, and UCLA
My dream school is Stanford but I know how difficult it is to get in, so please give suggestions to essays, ec, or anything that I can improve on

I'm a rising senior
Asian, Female
California resident
GPA: 4.65 (W), 3.89?(UW)
1 AP soph (world hist), 5 APs jr(calc ab, chinese, physics, chem, and eng lang), 3 or 4 sr
AP exams: all fives on the ones I took except for eng :[, 4
SAT Reasoning: 2040 :'[ planning to retake, probably will reach 2100s (rly low i know...)
SAT Subj: Math 800, Physics 770, Chem 740
Rank: either valedictorian or 2nd out of about 550-600 student body
ECs:
Math Team (9th, 11th, and 12th) captain next year :]
FNL (4 yrs) safe lifestyle club-(red ribbon week,no smoking, no drunkdriving etc) public relations person in jr year, president sr yr
CSF (4 years)
Key Club (4 yrs) rep during jr year
Mu Alpha Theta (9, 11, 12)
library volunteer about 250-300 hours

Essay: planning to talk about my experiences when I first came to America, went to a mainly African American and Latino school, culture shock and what I learned

one last thing, should I try for early decision for stanford?

Almost every immigrant writes about the culture shock. Trust me, I would know. And that won’t necessarily help you stand out.

In addition, your SAT scores are going to kill you. As an Asian female, you (we) have the most disadvantage out of all racial/gender combination. Consider that Asians are 4.4% of the US population yet compose 18.5% of the college population. In addition, females now overcrowd many school campuses.

Key Club, Math Team, Mu Alpha Theta, again, are something very many Asians do, so your ECs won’t help you to stand out either. Keep in mind that there are literally tens of thousands of valedictorians around the world with similar stats.

If you want to be noticed by the college admissions, then you have to write a pretty kick-butt essay and an interview.

Even if you can get your sat up to a 2100, stanford will be a reach, it is always going to be a reach.
Also, you have sort of weak extras.
UCLA and UCB however are solid matches, especially if you can get the 2100. You will get into one of these.
I say if Stanford is your absolute favorite then sure try ED there, it can’t hurt. But just know the chances are still slim.
Also, get some safety schools and more matches!
Finally, don’t write about culture shock, its so normal. Make your essays stand out, and if you can try to make yourself seem less Asian.
The best advice is keep your grades up, try to become valedictorian.

to piggyback off of what samsunimomo said, y our ECs are technically good, but do not make you stand out or show much initiative/leadership outside of school.
try getting your SATs up and engaging in activities that make you appear more well-rounded.
otherwise, i’d say you’ve got a good shot.

I think stanford might be a bit of a reach with your sat scores but other than that you are a perfect match! The other two should be no problem for you at all! Good luck!

I agree with the posters above. Have you taken the ACT? Your rank is good and it helps that you live in California. I would say that you have a chance at the upper UCs, though Stanford may be difficult to get into. If you do well on the retake you will have a better chance. Regardless, I would apply and see what happens. Good luck!

ED stanford will still be a reach…your stats as an asian female aren’t out of the ordinary and your SAT score isn’t good enough. still worth a shot applying though if you write a really good essay and get great recs from your teachers.

It varies with different people. Sometimes people find that they do better on it than the SAT. That’s why I would suggest that you take it for comparison. If you find that you do better on the ACT, you can submit that score as an alternative for your SAT.

if i get a 34 on the act what’re my chances then? i rly wanna go to stanford :'[! oh oh oh and how accurate are “The REAL ACT prep” practice tests?? thanks everyone

Your GPA and rank are amazing, but the SAT and EC’s are kinda shabby.
With those stats, UCLA and UCB are probably good fits, but you really need to boost your EC

You need some more VP/President positions in clubs, some more outside activities

In your essay, whatever you do, do not write about culture shock and immigration. I can’t imagine the number of immigrants who write about that kind of thing. Try to write a unique essay from a unique perspective, such as from the point of view of a library visitor observing you as you volunteer, or something of the sort.
You want to make your essay as special as possible…and culture shock is as ordinary as you can get.

Also, Stanford’s admit rate is really low, and their admission process if a bit screwy to say the least, becuase people who have been admitted to Harvard don’t get into Stanford, but those who don’t get into UC Berkeley get into Stanford. All I konw is that in my school, only one person goes to Stanford each year.

awww i thought my ecs were okay… i heard that as long as you’re dedicated to around 3 of them it should be fine…? i think when people have a crazy list of positions it can be a bit overwhelming and they won’t be able to be as dedicated (my reason for having a few positions) & im kind of shy so it’s a miracle that i even have 2 president positions :[

i have already changed my mind about the cutural shock thing… true it is cliche

i thought a 34 act would help :[… emo

Your AP’s, GPA, and SAT II’s are really, really good.
SAT I needs to go up.
As of right now, Stanford is a reach (like it is for everyone)
Get your SAT’s to like a 2200 and it may become a low reach or high match.
UCLA and Berkeley you have solid chances at.
