*Start these first if you don't have much time please
THANKS!

B u m p

Wow, your stats are amazing. One thing that I immediately noticed was your involvement. I think that this will help you at any of the colleges you apply to. The only reason I could see why you would be rejected at a place is your SAT scores. They are high, but I know that a lot of selective colleges really put emphasis on 2100+ SAT scores.

Thanks a lot man, only question is ACT 32 is equivalent to 2280-2370 SAT, so does that mean that its still a huge problem? I think my grades are getting me rejected honestly…

But anyway thanks again, and if you have any comments for specific colleges that’s much appreciated

You’ll probably be in for all of the schools you listed except the first four, and even then you have a shot. Chance me back please

Well that Blows… My new top choice is columbia…then berkeley haha

*Columbia University: Biology–extremely high reach
*Dartmouth College: Biochemistry, Biophysics, Psychology—extremely high reach
MIT: BME (although you don’t apply to a major)—out of the question
*University of California Berkeley: BME ---- reach
*UT Austin: BME and Biology (if you don’t get BME they look at Biology)–attainable
Rice University: BME–reach
*University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign: BME–low reach
Ohio State: BME–i don’t knoow
*Washington University @ St. Louis: BME–i don’t know

while you have a pretty legit resume, your sat math scores are pretty bad for a future engineer, and that will result in immediate rejection from many highly competitive engineering programs where math 1 & 2 800’s are a dime a dozen. sorry for a pessimistic review, but good luck

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1053696-i-will-chance-back-within-next-several-hours.html</a></p>

No thanks a lot, the realism is helpful in sort of consoling me.

Everyone’s been commenting about SAT, but I’m not sending it, so if the 34 ACT Math + 32 Math composite is sent, that shoudl be ok right?

I’m about to chance you

Columbia University: high reach
Dartmouth College:high high reach
MIT: astronomical reach
University of California Berkeley: high reach
UT Austin: match
Rice University: low reach
University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign: match
Ohio State: match
Washington University @ St. Louis: match

Kapster, I really feel bad to say this, but feel an obligation to due to my honest nature. At the elite colleges such as MIT, Dartmouth and Columbia, you really don’t stand a chance (I’m not trying to offend you, just going from a objective point of view after looking at the '12-'14 decision threads). Your Math II and Biology SAT II scores are quite low amidst a pool of straight 800’s SAT II’s, and your ACT/SAT scores aren’t that helpful either.

However, with that said, top schools reject 2400’s SAT’s and perfect GPA/SAT II’s every year, while accepting some, albeit only a few, people with your stats. If you could make yourself stand out, STAND OUT, somehow, then your chances at admissions are much higher than you think.

One of my friends got into ED Columbia this year (I’m so happy and proud of him) with ACT 32 and 590 on U.S. History, and 680’s on Biology and Math II. However, he was ranked #1 in our school and demonstrated that he shows remarkable capability despite his poor testing performances. Also, his outstanding extracurriculars and his essays really make him distinct among a very very competitive pool of applicants. Do the same, and don’t be surprised if you are admitted. However, do prepare for rejection as well, for even with a strong essay and EC, it is very very hard to get in with those scores.

Thanks a lot pianodude, honesty is much appreciated

Look, I know the first 4 are hard to get into, and Im just glad people are confirming my beliefs (my parents made me apply to MIT, no chance in hell I’ll get in)

As for Dartmouth, I have a letter of rec from an alumni who teaches debate for me now, a peer rec and a rec from the head of debate there
I said I’d be debating so would that increase my chances at all?

Hm…debate is a very “cliche” EC, but if you choose to pursue it, it can only help you. That letter from the Dartmouth alum definitely would help, as colleges like to hear from their “ancestors”, and if you can get very very strong recommendations from the aforementioned people, then your chances are much higher. Make sure, however, that they don’t simply write “this student is a great student and has contributed much to our school”. Rather, have them write a short anecdote on a specific moment and elaborate at that into your passion for debate, this will help out so much more. Of course, don’t tell your teachers what to write, but simply offer them some advice and be like “I would appreciate it if you could use a specific moment in your recommendation” or the like.

I’m applying for Dartmouth as well :D

Best of luck to you and I know that you will be going to a great college,

Piano.

Feel free to chance me :)

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1053466-chance-chinese-international-applicant-please-updated-format-will-chance-back.html</a></p>

I’ve already chanced you haha.
Thanks a lot for your help.
By the way, alum is also the debate teacher so he knows me quite well

Good luck to us both

I concur with everything pianodude said, and want to add one more thing. Many top colleges try to look for clarity in any given application (i don’t think clarity is the right word, but rather a vivid image of who the applicant is), and this is especially important with their intended major. You have very strong ECs and awards that point much more to a liberal arts kid than a BME kid, especially with lower test scores in math and science subject tests. If you’ve already applied, fine, but if not you may want to consider what you put down as intended major, or even if that’s what you want to do with your career.

Thanks a lot JSSJosh, but I’m pretty set on BME or Biology. While, yes, my ECs and awards reflect very liberal arts approaches, I think that’s more a reflection of my multi-faceted approach to life. I have a clear vision of medical school and find that BME is a great mechanism not only for getting there but also because the engineering mindset is that of problem solving which is the paradigm through which I see the world. I’ve finished my essays and am in the middle of reviewing those chance schools now; please let me know if there’s anything I can do to augment my application (I do not intend to take tests again; I’m not stupid, I just don’t think I’ve learned how to test take effectively in high school). Thanks a lot for your help and let me know if I can chance you or help you out somehow.
