Chance me please, will chance back!

I want some opinions on my chances of getting into these schools before I apply.

Ga-tech
Emory
Vanderbilt
Duke
Cornell

GPA- 3.6ish (unweighted) 3.9ish (weighted)
Class Rank- Top 16% (517 students) very competitive class

SAT- 700 Math, 650 Critical Reading, 700 Writing....Will be taking again with a high chance of doing better since these scores were my first time taking it... and also maybe taking ACT
SAT II- Soon taking Math 2 and Chemistry....should be no problem getting 700-800 on both for me

AP
World History-4
Chemistry- 5
U.S. History- 5
English Language- 5
Calculus AB- 5
Biology- ? (probably 5)
Physics C- ? (probably 4 or 5 on both parts)
Psychology- ? (probably 5)

Macroeconomics- ? (probably 5)
English Language- ? (probably 5)

My weakness seems to be my GPA, class rank.

Your Thoughts and Comments are Very Much Appreciated

High Reach
Duke

Reach
Emory
Vanderbilt
Cornell

Safety
Georgia Institute of Technology (If that’s what you mean by Ga-tech)

I’m sure your college list is still incomplete, but I highly recommend searching for some schools that match your stats better. The bulk of your list should be matches, with a couple safeties and two to four reaches.

It helps us chance you if you provide your planned major (or “undeclared” if you’re going to apply without choosing).

Thanks, I plan on majoring in chemical or biomedical engineering. Do you have any suggestions of match colleges for me that are good for these majors?

I’d be glad to chance another wrestler.

I’d say that Duke is the biggest reach on this list. Not being top 10% of your class may or may not be a problem, depending on the caliber of your high school. Still, it leaves something to be desired. Definitely retake the SAT, 2050 is in the lower 30% for a lot of these schools and you need to make up for your gpa. Don’t get me wrong, your gpa is still good, but it’s not fantastic.

You have taken a ****load of AP’s, so the rigor of your coarse load is top notch. That may also make up for a slightly lower gpa than the average student at these schools.

Your extracurriculars are very strong, but not outstanding.

You have a decent chance at Vandy and Emory, but it’s still a bit of a reach
Cornell is a reach
I have no idea about Georgia institute of technology.

Chance me back

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/769995-help-me-figure-out-what-my-options.html#post1063148832</a></p>

Thanks. I really feel that I’ve taken the most challenging course-load at my school, and it has definitely lowered my grades a little bit. Do you really think the 11 AP’s and numerous honors classes will help some of the higher up colleges overlook my slightly lower gpa?
I think I’m going to rule out Duke as an option, but I really like Cornell. Are my chances there reasonable enough to spend the time on the essays.

Here are a bunch of other schools you could look into, many (but not all) of which are probably matches:

Boston U
Bucknell U
GWU
Gettysburg College
Lafayette College
Hofstra U
Illinois IT
Northwestern U
McGill U (in Canada)
Florida International U
Johns Hopkins
Rensselaer Poly I

It’s okay to apply to a high reach if you really like Duke. And it’s absolutely reasonable to apply to Cornell. Reaches are like a college lottery: you’re not as likely to win, but if you do, you’ll be ecstatic (you should have seen my leaps for joy when I got admitted to Amherst!).

Shouldn’t be too hard for the first 3. Duke/Cornell might be a bit of a reach though. It’d be easier if you upped your SAT scores.

(Chance me back!)

High Reach
Duke

Reach
Emory
Vanderbilt
Cornell

Thanks for the college suggestions, I really appreciate it. Does being a wrestler and wanting to be a part of a college’s wrestling program help with admissions, although I wouldn’t be a recruit?

Ga-tech( safety for sure)
Emory- Seems to be a target , or a very low reach )
Vanderbilt( Vandy is known for really high sats and not mega high gpas, even if its still 4.0’s and 3.7’s …so target)
Duke(doesnt duke like most athletics… so low reach/target)
Cornell( high reach if you’re for the CAS college, otherwise low reach)

chance me back
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/770608-chance-me-above-average-schools-will-chance-back.html</a></p>

im also a 1st generation student if that helps at all

Ga-tech - Match
Emory - Reach
Vanderbilt - Reach
Duke - High reach
Cornell - High reach

Good luck, man. Your GPA isn’t bad at all.

yeah i agree with slightlystoopid Ga-Tech definitely a match. Cornell does seem pretty difficult though.

i pretty much agree with the others. duke and cornell are pretty much reaches D:

Oh by the way, it may sound a bit stupid but when ppl say “weighted gpa” are they counting freshmen year too? or is it just sophmore and junior year

I count my freshman too, unfortunately since I kind of didn’t try very hard.
That’s how it shows up on your transcript - all high school years together.

Georgia Tech- safety
Cornell - reach/high reach
Duke: reach
Vanderbilt- reach

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/768929-chance-me-please-i-will-chance-back.html</a></p>

awww man :‘[! wow then how do people manage to get like 4.7s? O_O mines 4.64 but its only soph and jr… if i include freshman 4.25 D’: sob

bump, anymore chances?

I’d call Duke and Cornell reaches, Vanderbilt a low reach, and rest matches/high matches.

Chance back? (:
