Chance Me Please: Yale, Cornell, etc. (Will chance back!)

School Choices
Goal - Yale
2nd's - Cornell, Brown, Duke
Backups/Matches - UNC-Chapel Hill, GaTech, UGA

I intend to major in Biochemistry or some sort of Biology/Chemistry mix.

White Male (Unfortunately...)
Competitive Public High School in Metro Atlanta, GA

GPA - 4.0 Unweighted, 4.379 Weighted
Rank - 6/465 (Top 2%)
Currently a Junior

I have taken all Honors/AP (when possible)

Tests -
PSAT (10th grade) - 180
PSAT (11th grade) - 216
(69 Reading, 80 Math, 67 Writing)

First SAT was abysmal 1370/1940
However, pretested two times at a 33 and 34 respectively on the ACT, and I'm feeling much better about that one. (Results back in a few weeks)

SAT II Physics - 680 (I took it several months after I finished with the class...)
Plan to take USH, Lang, Math II

AP Physics B - 4
APUSH - 5
AP Language - 5

ECs
National Honor Society - Vice President
Beta Club - President
Renaissance Club (Service + Honor Society) - General Board
French Honor Society
Foreign Language Club
Student Government
Key Club (Service) for two years (quit due to how unorganized the club was)

St. Andrew Rowing Club (Crew) - Varsity Men's Co-Captain
Rower - Since 8th Grade, Will be through 12th
Hoping to be a recruit, however, with current scores, that is unlikely.

Awards/Honors
Duke TIP Program (Since 4th grade)
St. Andrew Rowing Club - Most Valuable Oarsmen (2009-2010)
Principals Honor Roll

National Merit Scholar (Find out in September)
Currently AP Scholar, hopefully "with Distinction" or "National" after Senior year.

My biggest lacking is in service, but I have participated in 3 Susan G. Komen's Row for the Cure raising over $2000 to donate. Also, I have participated in 4 River's Alive! which is a program to clean up local rivers, collecting trash mostly. Every summer I volunteer for my rowing club to teach kids how to row at summer session, acquiring about 90 hours per summer.

Senior schedule:
AP Calc BC
AP Chem
AP Literature
AP Econ/Gov
Senior Psychology
Either AP French or Honors Anatomy (Undecided)

What should I do?
What class should I take next year: Anatomy, or continue on with French into AP. I do not feel I would do well on the exam in French at all (3 BEST case), and I feel like anatomy is more suited to my major in Bio/Chem, but I worry that these upper level schools prefer continuing on with language. Thoughts?

Let me know if you need any more info?

Thank you so much for any advice. I really appreciate the help. Post your thread and I will chance back.

Brown and Duke are probably within low reach, if not nearly matches. Yale will be tough, and your SAT score may hurt you (although I think you can just send in the ACT). I would try to do more ECs outside of schools. Also, I think going into French AP is the best, because it shows the most devotion, and they like foreign languages. However, if you do not think you can get an A in the course, Anatomy is the better option.

your EC’s, GPA and rank are good, i think you just need to see if you’ve done really well on your tests scores. all the best! please chance me back at

Bump. Anyone, please?

I disagree with Stevenf…Brown And Duke are not matches or even low reaches. You have excellent credentials, but these schools are at the top of the top. Yale is not sooooooo much more of a reach. And I think they would like to see Anatomy…it is interesting to have an applicant like you, with AP this, AP that, do something different, and unique, such as that. Follow what you enjoy
Best of luck!

Concentrate on being recruited for rowing. You can contact crew coaches during your junior spring semester, and after July 1st they can contact you. Start reading the guidelines for NCAA athletes at the NCAA Clearinghouse website- you can download the rules and regulations. Also start the registration process as an NCAA athlete at the site- it takes many months to be completed and gain eligibility (transcripts, official test scores needed, etc.)

Of course, for the Ivies, you will also need excellent test scores, so continue working on those. (If you earn the 34 ACT you hope, that would sweeten the deal considerably.)

Goal - Yale - REACH
2nd’s - Cornell, Brown, Duke - Mid reach
Backups/Matches - UNC-Chapel Hill, GaTech, UGA - Matches ( Not backups)

CHANCE BACK!

Yale might be a little tough, but I bet you could definitely get into Duke! For now I recommend working on improving your SAT score because that is veryyy important. Good luck!

I think your ACT scores make up for your SAT score so you should be fine

Goal - Yale - Reach for everyone
2nd’s - Cornell, Brown, Duke - low reaches
Backups/Matches - UNC-Chapel Hill, GaTech, UGA - Match/In

chance back
