Out of Stater University of Maryland-College Park Chance
Hey I was wondering if anyone could please chance me for UMD-College Park

I'm an out of stater
SAT Scores
Reading-550
Math-740
Writing-670
Essay-11

I'm a Senior at an all IB school. So far, I've scored 4's on both History and Spanish. This is additionally an honors only high school, so every class is honors. My GPA is an 86.64, but if I had attended a regular high school, I'd probably be somewhere in the low to mid 90s.
I have an excellent letter of recomendation.
Extra curriculars- I'll have 4 years of baseball, 4 years of volunteer service at Ronald McDonald House, summer job in both sophomore summer and junior year summer. I've also been an SAT math tutor.
I went in Early Action.

Forgot to mention, the 4’s were both SL courses. I’m also taking IB Math SL, IB Biology HL, IB Physics HL, and IB English HL. I’ll test for those 4 in May.

Hi there. What does your GPA translate to on a 4.0 scale? Maryland students won’t be familiar with the percentage system generally (though admissions will be). My guess is you’re in.

It really helps that you’re from an elite school. MD and most universities do not take course rigor lightly. Your school should have Naviance so you should be able to get a more accurate answer from your guidance counselor about whether or not MD is a match for you, but I’m guessing if your GPA is above a 3.0 with a full IB schedule you are pretty much in. I’m not sure how much more competitive OOS admission is, but IS students with fairly low GPAs but very rigorous course schedules generally gain admission.

Your SAT doesn’t really correspond to your assertion that your GPA would “be in the 90s” at any other school though. Most students with 3.6+ GPAs in rigorous courses can pull better than a 570 on CR But for UMCP I think you’re fine, esp. with that math score.

Your GPA and reading section are low, even adjusting the GPA for a regular high school. The average weighted GPA of a student entering last year (current sophomores) was 3.9. (About a 95-96 if you’re from New Jersey/New York)
Your other stats are great though. So I wouldn’t be surprised either way.
If it makes you feel better it’d be the same if you were from Maryland.

My D has little lower than your scores and same GPA. Her teachers and counselors told her that she may get in if not applying for Limited Entry programs (ex: engineering). As I have seen myself, there are acceptances in previous years for lower than these numbers but there are also rejections around. I guess we need to wait late for regular decision outcomes fingers crossed.

Yeah, I applied Arts and Sciences so hopefully I can get in. I know my GPA isn’t too strong, but I hope being from the school I go to can help. I take only honors and IB classes so that has to help at least a little.
