Hi guys,
I'm an American born citizen but I live in Lahore, Pakistan. I took my SAT this December (1st attempt) and got 1620/2400 (CR 520, M580, W 520) I know it's pretty poor and i'm thinking of retaking in January and I bet I could break the 2000 barrier but i'm not sure if WUSTL will accept my scores-I think i'll be late. I have got TONS of medicine related EC's including volunteering at a hospital, flood relief, Punjab Chief Minister Dengue Fever Task Force Student Leader, etc, etc. I also have a great essay-or so i've been told :P, great letters of recommendations and an overall good profile. The only thing is my SAT score :|
Also here in Pakistan we dont have any GPA or class ranks but my overall score is an A grade.
Do you think I could get into WUSTL or even better into their accelerated med program (bs/md). I have completed their supplemental essay.
Also, cshould I take my SAT 1 again in January because I know I will improve but will WUSTL consider them or not?
Please reply soon.
Thanks!

Have you considered the ACT instead?

No not really because I have absolutely NO idea about the exam pattern and i’m not even sure if they are offered in Pakistan.

With those SATs the odds are stacked heavily against you. That doesn’t mean, of course, that it’s impossible, but it’s very unlikely. If you were my kid, I would consider whether WashU is the place where you’d be most likely to thrive. Frankly, I think those SAT scores suggest you might get buried by the competition from other pre-meds there.
Good luck whatever you decide to do.

Thanks for replying. So do you think I should appear in January? I think I could get my score up around 150-200 points. Is that enough? Could you please tell me the average stats of those that do get in.
Thanks!

Sorry to say, you have absolutely no chance at the bs/md program (they accept like 5 people every year and all those people have crazy stats). If you want a decent chance at getting into WashU, you should break at least 2000, preferably 2100-2200. 150-200 points are not enough.

^^ agreed.

Sorry, but I can pretty safely say you have a miniscule chance at being accepted bs/md. But again, less than 1% of accepted applicants get into that program.

As for the average stats, google is your friend.

damn…oh well, what about the regular undergrad program? Do I stand a chance? And is it worth it?

In my honest opinion, no.

2000 is considered low at Wash U. 1620 is just way too low. Raise your SAT by 400 points and you might have a chance, but it will still be small.

so even at 2000 I don’t really stand a chance? I got GREAT EC’s and I think a really good essay. That still won’t help for the normal undergrad program?

Well the thing about your EC’s is that literally half of most entering classes want to be doctors, and your EC’s very clearly say that you want to be a doctor, let alone your applying into the MSP. So you are going to be competing with students who not only have just as brilliant EC activities on their applications as you, but scores that fall within the middle 50% of WashU students as well.

To get into WashU, every single part of your application really must standout to the admissions committee to have even a 50% chance at getting in. There are just so many talented prospects applying, that no one is guaranteed a spot. So if you can get the SAT score up so that every subsection is >700, you will have a much better chance. Even if just the CR and M sections are over 1400 combined, you will have a much, much better shot at WashU.

ohh…thanks! I think I’ll get about 2000 (CR650, M700, W650-700) so maybe that’ll help. Other than WashU, where do you guys think I should apply-with my new SAT score. And keep in mind I want to become a Doctor.

Hey Lahore Pakistan Represent! I was born there and am living in NJ currently. Also applying to WashU. But yeah you need to up your scores to have a decent shot. Aim for 2050+, you can do it with hard work!

Thanks! I wasn’t born here, I was born in Charleston, SC America! But both my parents are Pakistanis and well…I consider myself Pakistani!!
Anyways…yeah I’m aiming for 2000+ and in most of the practice SAT tests I take, I score 1950-2000 so I guess that’s what I expect!

You can go to anywhere for undergraduate and go to medical school. so look for schools that match with your stats and have other characteristics that you like other than academics. I’m guessing you’re looking for a mid-sized school in a urban or suburban area, that is moderately competitive, if you’re looking for something similar to WashU. Plug that criteria into a college search engine (I know there is one at collegeboard, thats the one I used), and research the results it gives you.

sorry guys for the late reply
@NWrnnr5 you are absolutely right but I think the college’s name does play a role. Lol anyway…I got rejected
wasn’t really expecting to get in. I just hope I get into GWU.
btw…my 1950-2000 predicted score actually turned out to be a 1730
atleast my toefl was good 113/120

sorry about the rejection but there were LOTS of them with nearly 29000 applicants. 1730 is low for GW too though but good luck!

@ceresma yeah i know 1730 is low but hopefully i’ll get in!
